A Southland Conference showdown at Southeastern’s illustrious Strawberry Stadium in Hammond, La. A showdown between the Lions and the Demons. This was a game that did not lack scoring, unless you were a Northwestern St Demons fan.
The game started off with the Demons receiving the toss. Demons would start off with the ball at their own 23 yard line. The drive ended as quickly as it started. The Demons would gain zero yards on their first possession and punt the ball away to the Lions with 14:40 remaining in the 1st quarter.
Southeastern would start their first possession on their own 10 yard line. Southeastern, being the balanced attack they are, would hand the ball off to their big RB, Antonio Martin, who would get things started with a 20 yard gain.
Eli Sawyer would dish the ball out to WR Jaylon Domingeaux for a 21 yard catch and run to get Southeastern even closer to scoring range.
RB Harlan Dixon would get the carry and rush for 21 yards and set up SLU at the 4 yard line. Southeastern would score off of a slip pass from Eli Sawyer to WR Brandon Hayes for the 4 yard score to put Southeastern on top 7-0 with 8:09 to go in the first.
Northwestern St would get the ball back and have their best drive of the entire game. The Demons would drive the ball all the way to the Southeastern goal line, but the Lions defense came up big. CB Keydrain Calligan punched the ball out to force the fumble and the Lions recovered in the back of the end zone for the touch back.
The offense would reward the defense for their work, Eli Sawyer finds WR Darius Lewis for the 42 yard catch and score with 1:04 in the first and the Lions extend their lead to 14-0
The Demons didn’t get anything going on their next few possessions. Small yardage, and minimal gains throughout the day.
The next scoring drive came late in the second quarter, after a 30 yard Punt Return from Darius Lewis setting up SLU at the 5 yard line in scoring range. The Demons would actually get a stop on the day, holding the Lions to zero yards and forcing a 19 yard Field Goal. SLU leads 17-0 at the end of the first half.
The second half is where Southeastern put their foot on the gas and didn’t let up. Scoring drive after scoring drive for the Lions. Imposing their will on the Demons.
The Lions would score on each of their next few possessions in the second half to bring their lead to 41-0 with 8:48 to play in the fourth quarter. Around this time, Coach Frank Scelfo, would pull his starters with victory pretty much a certainty.
Southeastern would be able to kneel the final 1:56 off the clock and the Lions notch another win in the Southland Conference. Lions win the ball game 41-0.
Southeastern now is 5-1 in the conference. And travel to Thibodeaux to face the Nicholls Colonels for the River Bell classic.
