For the first time ever in the history of the Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game, a player from the state of New Mexico will be taking part in this prestigious All-Star event. That player is Capital High School defensive end Jonah Waipa.
At 6’5, 215 pounds, Waipa is a long, rangy defensive end that can get to the quarterback in quite a hurry. His length, twitchiness, and athleticism makes it tough for opposing offensive tackles to block him one on one. It also makes it tough for quarterbacks to escape when Waipa is bearing down upon them. Although the New Mexico native is more known for his pass rushing skills, Waipa is also strong against the run given his 455 pound deadlift max in the weight room.
This past season, the Capital Jaguars pass rusher had 59 tackles, five sacks, and a recovered block punt. With a 3.65 GPA, this All-Academic performer has a couple of offers from Highlands University and Concordia University, but Jonah Waipa is making the 14 hour trip to Baton Rouge to have one more opportunity of impressing college coaches before playing at the next level for this year’s Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game. The game will be played on Monday, December 30th at Memorial Stadium.
