Jalen Milroe Runs All Over LSU Once Again Dashing Tigers’ Playoff Hopes 42-13

After running wild against LSU last season to 155 yards and four touchdowns, Jalen Milroe replicated his performance against the Tigers this season by gashing their run defense once again to 185 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to pummel LSU’s playoff chances by a final score of 42-13.

“Look, if you are watching the game, you’re like, what did these guys do for two weeks? We have a scheme to stop the quarterback. We did not get that done. So I take responsibility for it. Blake is not going to hide from the responsibility, but we also have to put our players in the right position to take advantage of what they are capable of doing. We own it together and we have got to get it fixed, certainly, because it has been a couple of weeks now, you know, in two games.”

The same issues that plagued the Tigers in the second half against Texas A&M reared its ugly head once again. The inability to stop the quarterback running game and turning the ball over were the two biggest causes of LSU’s flat performance.

“There were certainly a lot of things that did not go the right way tonight with not being able to get off the field on 3rd down, turning the ball over on offense, and it just seemed there were at times some key things in the game that didn’t go our way. It was one of those nights where you look at it in its totality. Take nothing away from Alabama. They played very well tonight as well, but we are dealing with a second loss in the SEC, and we are on the uphill.”

Garrett Nussmeier has turned the ball over six times in the last six quarters and threw a costly red zone interception when the Tigers were trying to get back in the football game on the first drive of the second half. He finished completing 27 of 42 passes for 239 yards and one late touchdown to Kyren Lacy, but also threw two interceptions and fumbled once.

Defensively, Jihaad Campbell was a problem all night as he accounted for 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and three tackles for loss.

“To think about the score, the touchdowns for us that we got in those moments and then to hold them to field goals and just being able to slowly extend the lead. Putting the pressure on them, every time you have a drive your swapping field goals for touchdowns. I thought that was huge. I love where our defense is at right now where you might give up a play here and there, but they move on to the next one, go out and execute. They get in that mindset where one yard’s too many. They didn’t want to give up that touchdown at the end either so a lot of pride right now on that side of the ball.”

LSU also had seven costly penalties including two holding penalties that disrupted two promising drives and a facemask penalty by Saivion Jones that prevented the Tigers from going off the field and which also led to an Alabama touchdown.

The Tigers also could not get off the field on third down with Alabama staying ahead of the chains and converting 10 of 13 attempts to keep drives alive.

LSU picks up their second straight conference loss after starting the SEC season winning their first three games.

The Tigers will look to bounce back and work on the areas that have plagued them the last three weeks on the road against the Florida Gators.

“I think everybody asks the same question. We are disappointed. We are disappointed in the way we performed. You know, these guys are not like, ‘We are out of the playoffs!’. They are disappointed and I am disappointed that we did not live up to the standards of LSU football. That affects us more than the damn playoffs. We are disappointed because when you put on the jersey for LSU, there’s a standard of football. Those 3 letters on your jersey, it is a prerequisite and we did not live up to that. That is the disappointment.”

LSU HC Brian Kelly

After a day that was full of energy and excitement with College Gameday kicking everything off, the performance and product on the field turned out to be a dud for LSU fans.

“What we thought would be an exciting evening turned out to be a disappointing evening. I told my team I was certainly excited coming into the game about their preparation and the way that they thought about this game, what they needed to do physically, mentally, all the things that we talked about. I was excited about their preparation. They were ready to play. I take ownership of not getting our guys in the right position tonight, and we just did not make the best of the opportunities that we had.”
