Jennings goes 6-0 after a commanding win over South Beauregard

On a vibrant homecoming night in Jennings, Louisiana, high spirits and dominant runners filled the Friday night light’s atmosphere.

The Jennings High Bulldogs entered the home game matchup 5-0 against the South Beauregard Knights, 5-1. After 48 minutes, Jennings finished the game the victor in a dominant 42-14.

Starting the game, the Bulldogs run game looked unbeatable, which would be a trend for most of the game. Junior running back Trevor Etienne and senior running back Jalen Lewis each had a rushing touchdown in the first half. From shedding blockers to elusive running mechanics, the two-headed running scheme looked to be invincible.

In the passing game, both quarterbacks prospered when allowed to stretch it downfield. Senior quarterback Bub Willridge for Jennings had one passing touchdown thrown into double coverage and placed perfectly. On the other side, South Beauregard’s senior quarterback Kyler Kibodeaux struggled to keep the offense on the field alongside his own trucking running back.

At the end of the first half, Jennings led by 21 points to the Knights zero, the Bulldogs defense steadily pressuring any offensive chances at superiority.

“I thought we had great balance tonight throwing and running the football,” said Jennings High Head Coach Rusty Phelps after the game, explaining the sheer experience his seniors had coming into the game.

Coming out of the half, the same was expected and delivered. Trevor tacked on two more rushing touchdowns to his name and Bub delivered with another scramble touchdown pass to a reliable senior receiver.

“He’s a competitor,” said Phelps, talking about Trevor. “He’s worked hard in the off-season, he’s put on 10 or 15 pounds and I’m real proud of how hard he’s worked.”

Trevor Etienne walks in for his third rushing touchdown of the night.

The Bulldogs defense continued to contain Kyler and the run game for a good part of the game. However, Kyler found a receiver of his own in the end zone along with the running game producing another score by the end of the night.

“This is the first time we’ve been ahead in a game all year,” said Phelps. “We’ve been down from 14 to 21 and able to come back.”

Jalen Lewis produces a nice gain on an run to the outside before being tackled by a South Beauregard defender.

At the end of the night, Jennings arose as the clear winner, commanding a win from a top-rated team and solidifying themselves atop the 3A leaderboards as a team to be reckoned with.
