1. 2024 WR Alex Green, Hutto HS (Texas)
For the second time this season, the Gridiron Football Player of the Week is from outside of the state of Louisiana. Wide receiver Alex Green out of Hutto High School gets the nod after he had a monster game this past weekend.
Green had 16 receptions for 300 yards and six touchdowns in Hutto’s 52-31 win over Temple High School (Texas). If you took a glance at Green’s performance, you would think those are passing stats. That’s how rare those types of performances are at the wide receiver regardless of what level you are playing football.
2. 2024 RB/LB Damari Drake, Evangel Christian Academy (La.)
RB/LB Damari Drake is the fourth player from Evangel Christian Academy to be nominated for Gridiron Player of the Week as his teammates DE Gabriel Reliford and brothers QB Peyton Fulgham and WR Parker Fulgham (Week 4 Player of the Week).
Despite his team losing 38-28 to Division II Non-Select state runner-ups North DeSoto High School, Drake had one of the best performances of the year in the state of Louisiana. Not only did Drake rush for 108 yards with a touchdown on offense, he recorded 21 total tackles (14 solo) with an interception and a forced fumble.
3. 2024 WR Tyler Johnson, McKinley High School (La.)
McKinley High School has been one of the better stories out of the Baton Rouge area as they have found success this year and the last. Not only did the Panthers upset St. Michael 28-24, but their best player that night, wide receiver Tyler Johnson, played on one good ankle. Johnson caught six passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns along with the game-winning touchdown.
4. 2025 RB Chad Elzy, Ascension Catholic High School (La.)
Okay, how good is this kid? Chad Elzy, our Week Six Player of the Week, returns in the Top 10 after his 348-yard, five-touchdown performance last week. Although he does not qualify for getting Player of the Week due to him winning the previous week, he may have topped his performance from last week.
In only 8 carries, Elzy ran for 313 yards with six of his nine carries being a touchdown for the Ascension Catholic Bulldogs. For all we know, if Elzy has another game like this, we might just have to make him the Player of the Year for all I care. Elzy should be getting an extra look after this season as he is truly a diamond in the rough.
5 & 6. ATH Chase Lewis, Varnado High School
I hope Varnado High School (La.) athlete Chase Lewis took as many ice baths as possible. The reason why I’m saying this is because Lewis played in two games in the same week, both resulting in wins.
In the first game of the week that was played last Monday, Lewis had 46 yards of rushing with a touchdown, two receptions for 33 yards with a touchdown and a pick-six in Varnado’s 22-20 victory over West St. John. In the second game that was played on that Friday in a win over Cohen 28-22, Lewis had three receptions for 144 yards and two receiving touchdowns on offense and had nine tackles (five solo) on defense.
7. 2024 OLB Kolaj Cobbins, Destrehan High School (La.)
OLB Kolaj Cobbins is one of the best linebackers in America. Cobbins is a four-star prospect out of Destrehan High School in the New Orleans area who measures 6-3, 215 pounds and is committed to playing at LSU next season.
Last Thursday in Destrehan’s 38-7 victory over a talented Terrebonne High School team, Cobbins showed everyone why he is one of the best linebackers in the country. He collected 14 tackles (11 solo), three tackles for loss, one pass breakup, two quarterback hurries and a pick-six.
8. 2025 LB Humphrey Ned, Jennings High School (La.)
Southwest Louisiana has had a lot of fantastic performances as of late with the exceptional play of Lafayette Christian’s Ju’Juan Johnson and many others. This time linebacker Humphrey Ned out of Jennings High School will get the nod. Ned recorded 13 tackles (11 solo), three tackles for loss, two sacks and had an interception returned for a touchdown in his team’s 35-7 victory over South Beauregard.
9. 2024 RB/LB Kadin Kunz, Fredericksburg High School (Texas)
For the second time on this list, we have a Texan. Kadin Kunz of Fredericksburg High School in Texas put on a heck of a performance in his team’s win 28-22 victory over Somerset.
Kunz amassed 54 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. However, his biggest impact was on the 13 tackles (six solo), a tackle for a loss and scored the game-winning touchdown when he recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
10. 2024 QB Peyton Floyd, Hewitt-Trusville High School (Ala.)
The final spot on the list goes to quarterback Peyton Floyd. Floyd is the starting quarterback at Hewitt-Trussville High School, which is one of the best football programs in the state of Alabama. In his team’s 55-27 victory over Vestavia Hills, Floyd completed 18 of his 23 for 169 yards and a touchdown and had 22 rushes for 257 yards and five touchdowns.
