Catholic High Edges Central 42-38 in Back and Forth Affair

There were a lot of headlines entering this highly anticipated Baton Rouge matchup as Central High School head coach David Simoneaux faced his former team in the Catholic High Bears this past Friday and the game certainly did not disappoint.

There was a lot of offense between both teams as close to 1,000 yards of total offense were accounted for.

The Catholic High Bears once overcame a 10 point deficit and were able to hang onto the lead thanks to the play of running back Barry Remo. The Bears’ star running back had 20 carries for 240 yards and three touchdowns including two touchdown runs of 63 yards and 42 yards in the fourth quarter.

The Bears also made some plays in the passing game as UL Ragin’ Cajuns quarterback commit Daniel Beale finished the game throwing for 191 yards and three touchdowns with Brooks Wright being Beale’s top target as he had five catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Central was able to get on the board with a Tucker Pitre fumble recovery that was returned 23 yards for the touchdown, but it was also the Wildcats offense that was able to keep up with the Bears’ offense for the majority of the game with three contributors as well.

Quarterback Jackson Firmin completed 17 of 31 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns with James Hussey having six catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. Running the football for the Wildcats was Damon Blocker, who also had a workmanlike day with 138 yards and two touchdowns.

In this see-saw back and forth battle, it was the Bears that just were a step ahead in a high scoring fourth quarter that saw five total touchdowns in the final 12 minutes of play with Catholic’s top three performers all having touchdowns.

Under first year Catholic head coach Hudson Fuller, it was a big district win for the Bears as they improve to 5-2 and 2-0 in district as they take on the Woodlawn Panthers this Friday.

Meanwhile, for David Simoneaux and the Central Wildcats, they came up just short of defeating Catholic and will fall to 5-2 and 1-1 in district. It does not get easier in the district for the Wildcats as they have another big district matchup against the Zachary Broncos on Friday.
