School Spotlight: Fredericksburg High School (Fredericksburg, Texas)

Fredericksburg High School-located in Fredericksburg, Texas-plays in the 4A classification of Texas High School football. They are ranked as the #603 team in the state, and the #58 team in their classification of 4A high school football. The Billies, whose colors are red and white, had a great year going 5-5 this year and making it to the first round of the UIL playoffs. Led by Coach Bill Wilder, the Billies have had success the past couple of years, continuously making the playoffs the past three out of five seasons. This past week, I talked with Coach Wilder and discussed with him many topics revolving around his football team.

Talking to Coach Wilder, I talked to him about how his program works. Fredericksburg is in a demographically pretty good area, where they build on the past success. While they are retooling everything, Coach Wilder got excited talking about the future of this program. He talked about how the program is looking pretty good, and he is excited for these new teams to continue the proud traditions of the Fredericksburg Billies. He has an experienced and consistent coaching staff where the coaches know most of these kids. He talked about how you “can’t ask anymore from these kids” since they do well in all aspects of life and work hard in the classroom and on the field.

One of the topics we discussed was coaching in a small town. Coming from Texas, I know how big high school football playing on Friday nights is. Talking to Coach Wilder, he described coaching in Fredericksburg, a small town, as awesome. Fredericksburg, like many small towns in the state of Texas, has a very deep community with a lot of community sport and generations. Many families in this town have deep generations with the school, which is a neat experience according to Coach Wilder. This town does not have a whole lot of move-ins so they know who the kids are going to be playing for the Billies.
