McDonogh 35 LB Keith Newsome has committed to the Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game, adding a threat to rush the passer that is extremely scary to the opposing offense.
Keith is a 1st team all district defensive end, but he will play linebacker in the game. Given his experience and ability as a defensive end, particularly as a speed rusher, he’ll certainly find a way to make his presence known in the backfield. He’s simply too small right now to play on the line in the game (6’1″ 200 lbs), but his instincts and athleticism as a speed rusher are too impressive to overlook. He is a monster coming off the line, with a lightning quick first step and a great swim move to beat his blocker into the backfield.
Even though he’ll probably play off the ball for the most part, those edge rushing skills can translate well to playing as a linebacker. Firstly, he’s obviously a huge problem as a blitzer if he is ever brought to rush. That can cause immediate chaos in the game, blowing up plays for the offense. Even outside of that, the instincts that make him so deadly as a rusher also lead to him being a great field general as a linebacker. He can read and react to the play as it develops, using that quick first step to get to the play quickly. And due to his lateral agility and general physicality (he plays a lot bigger than his size), he is highly unlikely to miss a tackle once he gets to the ball carrier. He’s already got some big name offers, Georgia Tech being the biggest, but the bowl game is always an opportunity for him to make more of a name for himself than he already has.
It means a lot to me to play in this bowl game. It shows that I had hard work and dedication.
