Thibodaux, LA – September 21, 2024 – In a resounding display of skill and determination, the Nicholls Colonels football team delivered a spectacular performance, overwhelming Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) with a crushing 66-0 victory at John L. Guidry Stadium. This commanding win not only marks the first victory of the season for the Colonels but also serves as a statement of their potential as they head into conference play.
A Historic Performance
From the very first whistle, the Colonels demonstrated their superiority on both sides of the ball. The offense, led by quarterback Pat McQuaide, wasted no time asserting dominance. McQuaide opened the scoring with a precision drive that culminated in a 33-yard touchdown run by Miequle Brock just 1:34 into the game. This set the tone for what would be a relentless offensive onslaught, with Nicholls racking up an astounding 657 total yards of offense.
The running game was a key factor in Nicholls’ success, with six different players contributing to the team’s 455 rushing yards. Miequle Brock led the charge with 132 yards and two touchdowns on just eight carries, including a breathtaking 68-yard dash in the third quarter that left the MVSU defense grasping at air. Corey Warren Jr. was equally impressive, tallying 124 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
Through the air, McQuaide and backup quarterback Jakob Foss combined for 202 passing yards and three touchdowns, with Brock adding an 80-yard receiving touchdown to his already impressive day. Quincy Brown also had a standout performance, hauling in five catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.
A Defensive Masterclass
While the offense was unstoppable, the Nicholls defense was impenetrable. The Colonels held MVSU to a mere 159 total yards, including an astounding -7 yards rushing. The defense forced six interceptions, stifling any attempt by the Delta Devils to mount a comeback. Ethan Lee, Destin Refuge, and Jamison Lindsey were among the standouts, each recording an interception that added to the team’s defensive dominance.
The defensive line was relentless, sacking MVSU quarterbacks four times and consistently pressuring them into hurried throws and mistakes. Quinton Sharkey led the charge with a critical sack that resulted in a loss of 11 yards, further demoralizing the MVSU offense.
Special Teams Excellence
Nicholls’ special teams were also a key component of the victory, consistently providing excellent field position and limiting MVSU’s opportunities. Kicker Gabe Showalter was perfect on the day, converting all nine extra-point attempts and adding a 37-yard field goal late in the second quarter to extend the Colonels’ lead.
Punter Kylan Dupre contributed with a 47.5-yard average on two punts, pinning MVSU deep in their own territory and setting the stage for the defense to shine.
Head Coach’s Remarks
Head Coach Tim Rebowe expressed his pride in the team’s performance, highlighting their preparation and execution. “This was a total team effort,” said Rebowe. “Our guys came out with energy, and they executed the game plan perfectly. We challenged them to be relentless, and they responded in a big way. This win gives us a lot of momentum as we head into conference play.”
Rebowe also praised the defense for their dominant performance. “To pitch a shutout in college football is no easy task, and our defense deserves a ton of credit. They were locked in from the start, and they never let up. This was a statement game for our program.”
Looking Ahead
With this emphatic victory, Nicholls improves to 1-3 on the season, while Mississippi Valley State falls to 0-4. The Colonels will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next challenge in conference play. The team is set to face a tough opponent in their next game, and Coach Rebowe is confident that his squad is up to the task.
“We know the competition only gets tougher from here,” Rebowe added. “But if we play with the same intensity and focus that we showed today, I believe we can compete with anyone.”
Fan and Community Support
The victory was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd of 4,828 fans at John L. Guidry Stadium, who cheered the team on from start to finish. The support from the Nicholls community was palpable, and the players fed off the energy of the crowd.
Athletic Director Jonathan Terrell expressed his gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support. “Our fans were incredible today,” Terrell said. “Their passion and energy created an electric atmosphere that our players thrived in. We look forward to seeing this same level of support throughout the season.”
