The Northshore Panthers strolled into the Tiger Den tonight to face off cross town rival Slidell Tigers. Slidell had been on a 4 game losing streak against the Panthers before tonight. Slidell would beat Northshore in an instant classic with the final score being 24-19.
The Panthers would receive the ball first, and start off on their own 34 yard line. RB Drake Gibson would get the Panthers started with a quick and easy first down on Northshore’s first play from scrimmage.
Northshore would go heavy on the rushing attack and would get into Slidell territory. However, at the 28 yard line the Panthers would turn the ball over on a fumble that would be recovered by the Panthers.
Slidell would hold Northshore to a 34 yard Field Goal which would be no good and the score remains 0-0 with 5:37 to go in the 1st quarter.
Slidell’s drive would start off with QB Ricky Williams throwing a bomb down field that would wind up incomplete, but the Panthers would be in the penalty by committing pass interference, giving Slidell a gift of a first down.
Later on in the drive Slidell would find themselves facing a fourth down with the ball at the 40 yard line. A QB keeper by Ricky Williams is sniffed out by the Panthers defense and Slidell turns it over on downs with 3:19 to go in the fires.
After a few small runs, RB Drake Gibson would find a crease and break free for the 60 yard Touchdown to put Northshore ahead 7-0 with 1:04 left in the first and that would be the only score in the first quarter.
Slidell’s next scoring drive came later in the second quarter. The drive begins with 4:52 in the second to go and the ball at the 34 yard line. QB Ricky Williams would dish the ball out to WR Carlos Flemings for the first down to get things going. A few QB runs from the shift Williams would set up Slidell in the red zone.
The Tigers would march all the way down the field and punch it in. QB Ricky Williams finds WR Carlos Flemings in the back of the end zone for the 1 yard score and puts Slidell on the board. After a failed 2 point conversion Northshore finds themselves leading at the end of the first half 7-6.
Slidell would start the second half off with the ball on their own 27 yard line. They would come out the gates swinging very quickly with a 40 yard completion from Williams to Flemings. Two first downs and the Tigers were in business.
With 9:14 to go in the third the Tigers would score. Once again Williams would find Flemings for the 26 yard Touchdown. Failed 2 point conversion, but Slidell takes the lead 12-7.
Failed onside kick sets up the Panthers at midfield. To get the Panthers started, RB Drake Gibson would burst through the gaps for a 38 yard run to set the Panthers up at the 10 yard line.
The Panthers would get to the goal line but DE Elijah Cross and the Tigers would come up with the goal line stand.
Tigers now in the back of their own end zone, get some positive yardage, but are taken away after some bone headed penalties. QB Ricky Williams would find the open WR Ramelo Howard for the 32 yard gain. The drive would stall out at the 37 yard line and the Tigers would be forced to punt with 2:53 left in the third.
Northshore would get the ball and march it down the field quickly off the backs of QB Donovan Weilbaecher and WR Derek Weilbaecher. The brothers would help the Panthers put more points on the board. With 20 seconds left in the third, the two brothers would hook up for a 17 yard touchdown to put the Panthers on top 13-12.
Both teams would punt the ball back and forth to each other in the fourth quarter. Neither team could get anything going, until Slidell SS Austin Buell blocked a Northshore punt to set the Tigers up at the 40 yard line.
The special teams would be rewarded later that drive. QB Ricky Williams would once again find WR Carlos Flemings for a 38 yard touchdown. With 5:08 to go in the 4th, Slidell regains the lead 18-13.
Northshore’s last scoring drive came with 3:43 to go. The Brothers Weilbaecher would find each other and Derek Weilbaecher would score the 55 yard touchdown. Northshore would take the lead once again 19-18.
Slidell with little time left remaining would have to find a way to score. They did just that. QB Ricky Williams would throw a jailbreak screen to WR Ramelo Howard and he would find an opening and take it to the house for a 87 yard touchdown with 2:38 to go and Slidell now has a 24-19 lead.
Northshore’s last ditch effort to score came down to the wire. KR Dwayne Jones returns the ball all the way to the Slidell 29 yard line to set the Panthers up in nice field position.
The Tigers defense would hold strong. With 29 seconds left Donovan Weilbaecher hails one to the end zone, and it falls incomplete.
Tigers hold on to win 24-19.
