There have been a lot of great running backs over the years to play for the Catholic High Bears. If it has been Warrick Dunn, Kevin Franklin, Travis Minor, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Derrius Guice, and plenty of others, they had all remarkable careers wearing the orange and black. However, there is only one that is on top of the record for most touchdowns scored in a game and that honor goes to sophomore Jayden Miles.
“I just have to give all my glory to God. I just have to put it on him. I didn’t know that I was going to do it. I really didn’t know about the record until they told me after the game. I just found out. It’s crazy. I have nothing to really say.”
Catholic High School 2027 RB Jayden Miles on the record
The sophomore running back is one of the top players at his position for the 2027 class and he showed off his talent on a huge stage against Baton Rouge powerhouse Zachary for the right to be the undisputed district champions.
It was quite a coming out party for Miles, who set two program records for most touchdowns in a game and most points scored by an individual player as he accounted for 44 points in what was an incredible offensive display. Miles’ touchdowns came from 2, 4, 45, 8, 1, 5, and 8 yards out. He also had a receiving touchdown and even threw a completion on a two point conversion attempt.
“He’s got incredible potential. The thing that is best about him is his character. He’s a great teammate. When he is done getting the interview done with you guys, he is back here helping to clean up the field. It was a great job by our offensive staff in putting a game plan together and really everybody collectively got it done.”
Catholic High School Head Coach Hudson Fuller
While Miles ran for 179 yards and had seven touchdowns, DaVekio Ruffin also put on quite a show as he just so happened to run for 298 yards and six touchdowns as well. The Zachary senior running back was overshadowed by Miles’ performance, but 13 combined touchdowns between the two showcased what kind of game it was as the Catholic High Bears outdueled the Zachary Broncos 73-55 to win District 4-5A for the third year in a row.
“It’s great. It’s not necessarily a focus for us going into the year, but it is one of the steps along the way. It should be a mark for the type of process that we want to have.”
Catholic High School Head Coach Hudson Fuller
The 73 points by Catholic High was the most points scored since the 1930’s and even though Miles stole the headlines, Baylor Graves also quietly had a record setting performance throwing for a school record 371 yards and three touchdowns. Cohen Leblanc finished with seven catches for 129 yards while Alex Huffine had three grabs for 123 yards including an 88 yard touchdown grab.
The Bears and Broncos had a lot of offensive fireworks combining for 128 points and 1,149 total yards of offense.
The difference in the first half was Catholic jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first four minutes. That start gave the Bears enough cushion to stay a step ahead of a Zachary offense that was clicking on all cylinders the rest of the way.
The Catholic High Bears finish the regular season undefeated at 9-0 while the Zachary Broncos finish the regular season at 6-3.
Both teams will await their playoff paths on Sunday.
