It’s not about how you start, but it is about how you finish. That is the old adage that has been said and LSU proved that on the road today in a tough environment in the SEC. LSU started the game as poorly on the road as one can possibly play with the Tigers trailing 17-0 against the South Carolina Gamecocks, but the Tigers were able to outscore the home team 36-16 to prevail on the road.
“Great college football game. So proud of the grit and the perseverance of our football team. Down 17-0, on the road in the SEC, against a veteran football team, they are not going to give up. That’s in their DNA.”
LSU HC Brian Kelly
It was a game in which both teams could point towards that were momentum plays going each way. LSU had opportunities in the red zone, but turned the ball over on downs once and an interception was thrown in the red area as well.
The same can be said for South Carolina as two penalties wipe away two pick sixes and an offensive pass interference penalty wiped away a big gain for the Gamecocks. It was a thrilling game throughout as LSU only led the game twice throughout the entire game, but was able to hang on to a 36-33 win as South Carolina kicker Alex Herrera’s game tying field goal attempt was no good sealing LSU’s win.
For a while, it looked like it was going to be a long game for the Tigers as South Carolina got off to a hot start scoring 17 points highlighted by a touchdown run by LaNorris Sellers and a Raheim Sanders touchdown run that was set up by a blocked punt.
However, LSU was able to settle back in the game thanks to the strong running performance of freshman running back Caden Durham, who finished with 98 yards rushing and two touchdowns on only 11 carries. He also helped put the Tigers on the board with a 26 yard touchdown. That helped LSU get settled in the game.
“He broke a ton of tackles. That’s the nature of the SEC, to make guys miss and run through tackles. He did a really good job of showing himself today and setting a standard of what we need at that running back position.”
LSU HC Brian Kelly on Caden Durham
LSU’s defense made its fair share of plays in the game forcing three turnovers. The first was an interception by Zy Alexander. The second was a fumble forced by Sage Ryan and recovered by Harold Perkins Jr., and the final one was a sack fumble forced by Bradyn Swinson.
LSU did claw back to a 17-10 deficit, but South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers broke through the LSU defense for a 75 yard touchdown to give the Gamecocks a 24-10 lead. However, LSU’s offense responded with a 75 yard drive themselves as Garrett Nussmeier connected with Kyren Lacy to pull within eight at 24-16. That would be the halftime score as the extra point was no good after Peyton Todd was unable to handle the snap on the extra point attempt.
In the second half, LSU was unable to score after having a first and goal at the four yard line. LSU would turn the ball over on downs to South Carolina’s offense, but LaNorris Sellers, who killed the Tigers’ rushing defense to 88 yards and two touchdowns, was dealing with an ankle injury that limited him in the second half. The defense forces a three and out with Robbie Ashford entering the ballgame for the Gamecocks and scores on the next possession with Durham’s second rushing touchdown to pull within two points. The two point conversion was unsuccessful with Nussmeier getting sacked and that made the game 24-22.
LSU gained its first lead of the game when Nussmeier found Mason Taylor for his second touchdown pass of the day capping off an 80 yard drive to give the Tigers a 29-24 lead starting the fourth quarter. It didn’t take long for South Carolina to answer as a minute later, Raheim Sanders gashes the Tigers for a 66 yard rushing touchdown to make it 30-29 as South Carolina’s two point conversion was no good.
LSU had a miscue on the ensuing possession as DJ Chester snapped the ball when Nussmeier was least expecting it. South Carolina fell on top of it and was able to extend their lead with a field goal to make it 33-29.
With seven minutes left in the game, the LSU defense got their third turnover with Swinson forcing a fumble and giving the Tigers a chance to take the lead. However, Nussmeier returned the favor by throwing an interception, which prevented the Tigers from taking points.
Still, with all the ups and downs, LSU had a chance to take the lead late and Garrett Nussmeier proved to be clutch down the stretch connecting with his favorite target Kyren Lacy for a 29 yard gain that eventually set up the eventual game winning touchdown run by Josh Williams.
Garrett Nussmeier finished the game completing 24 of 40 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns to one interception. Along with Caden Durham being the main guy on the ground, the receiving quartet of Kyren Lacy, CJ Daniels, Aaron Anderson, and Mason Taylor were on the receiving end of 20 of those completions and two touchdowns. Taylor had six grabs for 58 yards and a touchdown. Anderson had five grabs for 96 yards. Lacy had five grabs for 63 yards and one touchdown, and Daniels had four grabs for 53 yards. Despite only having seven yards of offense in the first quarter, the Tigers’ offense found a rhythm outgaining the Gamecocks 410 yards to 223 yards the following three quarters.
The defense gave up some big plays on the ground game with 243 yards on the ground, but did force three turnovers and got to the quarterback five times. Bradyn Swinson had five tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble. Saivion Jones had five tackles and a sack. Whit Weeks ended up being the leading tackler with 11 stops.
Brian Kelly was talking about how his team needed to make plays when it mattered and LSU was able to do so by weathering the storm on the road and getting their second largest come from behind victory in program history.
“It’s not perfect by any means. But, it’s early in the season, we’ve played two really good opponents, and we’ve had the lead in the fourth quarter twice. One we let slip away, and this one we finished off.”
LSU HC Brian Kelly on the team’s come from behind win
LSU will go back home next week and would like to build on what was a season alternating win for the Tigers. They go on the road for their first SEC game of the season and even their record at 1-1.
Next Saturday, LSU will host UCLA in Tiger Stadium. It will be a 2:30 kickoff with the game being broadcasted on ABC.
