The New Orleans Saints are approaching yet another new era of football. Recently the team fired Head Coach Dennis Allen after a 2-7 start and a 2 and a half year tenure. STs Coach Darren Rizzi has taken the reins as interim Head Coach for the rest of the 2024 season.
The last time the Saints fired a coach before the season’s end was Dick Nolan in 1980.
Now it is time to turn the page into a new era of Saints football. Many fans will be wondering and asking themselves, “who is gonna be the next coach”?
One coach that is on top of every team’s board will be Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson. Johnson is the most ideal choice for the Saints for many reasons. Being only 38 years old and being able to relate to younger players obviously is a good start. Being an offensive minded coach is probably what makes Johnson the most attractive candidate for the Saints job.
Historically defensive minded have not done very well here in New Orleans. So it is time to get back on the offensive side of the ball.
Since Ben Johnson was promoted to the Lions offensive coordinator position in 2022, the Lions have been top 5 in the league in overall offense and twice averaging over 30 points per game. Ben Johnson’s offensive coaching philosophies of note come from a variety of coaches. Coaches mentioned such as Mike Martz, Darrell Bevell, and Clyde Christensen. When you watch the Lions offense you can see a ton of the old St. Louis Rams/Mike Martz concepts from the Greatest Show On Turf days.
If the Saints were to land Ben Johnson as their next coach, it would inject new life not only in the building on Airline Drive, but also the city in general, as the last few seasons of Saints football have been subpar. Ben Johnson is the obvious, and ideal choice for the Saints’ head coaching vacancy.
