Entering the 2024 season Washington-Marion looks to Bounce back after a rough 2023 season only going 1-9. Although they have started the season 1-2 the Charging Indians look to turn things around and hopefully make a playoff birth. The Charging Indians look to turn things around this week with their game against St. Louis Catholic. First-year head coach of the Charging Indians came to talk about how he plans to turn things around.
Head Coach Dio Bernard has brought in a new workout system over the summer and he’s really been trying to get his team acclimated to it. He is looking for kids who can hold themselves accountable be there for the team and the coaches and not be selfish. He wants someone who comes in and puts work in and really grinds day in and day out. When asked how he plans on changing the scheme of things offensively and defensively this is what coach Bernard had to say.
Defensive, yes, we will be putting in a new scheme. Offensive is going to be kind of a mix up, going to be a gun wing team, we’re going to have the RPO with it, you mix up with it, you know, we’re going to spread the ball around to our athletes.

One of the first things when Coach Bernard got to Washington-Marion was to update the weight room so his players didn’t have to wait to use a certain machine. The administrators have been very supportive of anything he needs. They have been extremely helpful in the transition into this new head coach position and Coach Bernard could not be more grateful.
Ashton Savoie is a tight end for the Charging Indians, he is 6’3″ 187lbs and this tight end is fast with a 40-yard time of 4.7. What stands out most about Savoie is his ability to catch the ball in any situation. Being 6’3″ makes defending this tight end nearly impossible. Another aspect of his game that stands out is his ability to block. When asked about his goals for this season Savoie is planning on first-team all-state.
Dre Bernard is a junior defensive back at Washington-Marion this year, He is 5’7″ 145lbs. He is Coach Bernard’s son, he doesn’t mind that his dad is the coach, he says he still getting used to calling him coach but he does have that occasional slip-up. His main goal for this season is to make the first-team all-district. When asked what areas he would like to improve in this is what he had to say.
Man coverage, you know zone coverage always being in the play, always being able to make a play, work on my speed and to score more.
