The St.John Eagles are a 1-1 team, sitting in 1A District 8 level. Coming off of a 5-6 season last year the Eagles will look to improve this year, and make a run in the playoffs with hopes to play in the State Championship. The St.John Eagles are ran by Head Coach Bryan Troxclair, with top players such as Benjamin Gourgues, Jaran Primeaux, and Caden Cannella.
“Last year was my first year, we were plagued by injuries, a lot of injuries. So we kind of went to the drawing board starting in January, we kind of reevaluated the way we were lifting, and what we were doing. We put a big emphasis on lifting, making sure everybody is lifting year round, nutrition and drinking protein, and conditioning. We are a 1A school, so kids are playing baseball, we really tried to find a way to put it all together. The kids responded really well, they have seen massive gains in the weight room, and we find ourselves in a lot better shape this year than compared to years prior. We have participated in a couple 7 on 7’s not in the league. We hooked up with some other small schools like Central Private, Slaughter Charter, and some schools like that. We returned almost over 17 people, now they are Sophomores and Juniors.”
Coach Troxclair when asked how they prepared during the summer.
“We did not do spring, we have a pretty good baseball program, and so I just feel like with fatigue and stuff like that it was best to not do spring. We try to do an extra week in the fall if that makes sense.”
Coach Troxclair when asked if they would be doing Spring workouts.
“Well we have a kid his name is Ahmad Wilson I’ll just talk about him, he started for us last year. Very young, he’s actually been playing with us since 8th grade. Last year his role he was just a DB, running back, this year I am expecting him as a sophomore to really step up. He has tools and the ability to be a playmaker, we just need him to grow up and take the role.”
Coach Troxclair when asked who he expects to step up this year.
Caden Canella standing at 5’8 and weighing 145 Ib’s will look to help the Eagles on both sides of the ball this year. Playing both running back and defensive back for the St.John Eagles.
“So we are actually a Wing-T team, so we believe in the ground and pound style. That’s the offense that I ran while I was in High School, the offense I ran for some time while I was at Plaquemine High. you know as we get into Year 2 and Year 3 there are some spread concepts that we kind of trickle in that I am hoping that we can get to. Just to keep people kind of eye candy, you know there is an old saying it is a lot easier to fool them than to block them. The second we get those DB’s and Linebackers eyes wandering is when we try to make a big play. The Defense is and odd front, comes out in a 3-3 Stack, we do a lot of different things where we will bump, it is kind of a multiple defense. Depending on formations and personnel and what you are trying to do. We can evolve on what we need to do.”
Coach Troxclair when asked about the offensive an defensive schemes.
Benjamin Gourgues standing at 6’4 and weighing 270 Ib’s will look to make an impact on both sides of the ball for the St.John Eagles. Playing both Tight-End and Defensive End for the Eagles. Look for Benjamin to make a big difference for the Eagles.
“The district changed, we added North Iberville, it’s basically a Iberville district with Ascension Catholic and Ascension Christian. I am pretty excited about the district, I feel there are some good teams in there and coaches. We picked up Covenant Christian on our schedule, who we played last year in the Jamboree, very competitive team, a playoff team. We picked up Hamilton Christian, Haynes Academy, Springfield High School, and we kept Hanson Memorial on the schedule. I think it is very competitive and I think it will prepare us for the playoffs. Some of the things we have been talking about, is trying to get past that first playoff game and try to get that first playoff win. They have not had that first playoff win in quite awhile.”
Coach Troxclair when asked about the upcoming schedule for the Eagles.
Jaran Primeaux standing at 5’10 and weighing 233 Ib’s will look to make an impact on both sides of the ball for the Eagles. Playing both offensive and defensive lineman for the St.John Eagles.
“We are going to treat every football game like a playoff game. We are trying to work on winning a playoff game, so that’s the mentality we are treating every football game as.”
Coach Troxclair when asked about the expectations on the season.

“Nothing but great support. They are all constantly asking about me, asking if they can help me in any way. Teachers have been great, very supportive. It is like a family. We have a great alumni association, we have our sports boost club, they do a great job, very supportive. I am very lucky to have that support from those people.”
Coach Troxclair when asked about the staff members and community surrounding him.
The St.John Eagles will look to accomplish their goals they have set for the season. Under Head Coach Bryan Troxclair the team will look to treat every game played as if it was a playoff game. Believing this motivation will help take the Eagles on a long playoff run, and hopefully win their first playoff game in what has been a long couple years for the Eagles. Look for the Eagles to have a strong season with the help of their top players Benjamin Gourgues, Jaran Primeaux, and Caden Canella leading the way. The Eagles are currently 1-1 on the season and will look to add another win to the column when they face Hamilton Christian this Friday night.
