Why the Saints Should Draft LSU Cornerback Zy Alexander

Zy Alexander

The New Orleans Saints are in search of a lockdown cornerback since trading away Marshon Lattimore to the Washington Commanders at the deadline weeks ago. They should strongly consider drafting a lockdown corner and lucky for them there is one that is only an hour down the road. LSU’s Zy Alexander. Alexander has been a standout performer for the Tigers in 2024, excelling in man-to-man coverage and consistently shutting down opposing receivers. His blend of size, physicality, and football IQ makes him an ideal candidate for the Saints’ defensive scheme.

2024 Performance Highlights

Alexander’s ability to neutralize opposing offenses has been a cornerstone of LSU’s defensive resurgence this season. Over six games, he has recorded 12 tackles (11 solo), two interceptions, and three pass breakups. Notably, in a game against Ole Miss, he allowed just 27 receiving yards on ten targets, notched a crucial end-zone interception, and finished with an elite 88.9 coverage grade per Pro Football Focus. His performance contributed to LSU’s narrow 29-26 victory, earning him the game ball from head coach Brian Kelly.

While at Southeastern Louisiana (Before transferring to LSU) he totaled 97 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and nine interceptions, while also being named a FCS all-American in 2022, and being named first team all-Southland Conference in 2021 and 2022.

Alexander’s skill set extends beyond coverage. He is a dependable tackler who can handle one-on-one matchups against physical receivers, a trait current Saints defensive coordinator Joe Woods would value or any other defensive coordinator would value. His aggressive play style has also discouraged quarterbacks from targeting him, which reflects his ability to control his side of the field.

Fit with the Saints

The Saints need more depth and reliability at cornerback. Marshon Lattimore no longer being in the building makes Alexander a perfect fit. His ability to thrive in press coverage mirrors what the Saints demand from their corners, and his tackling ability would bolster the team’s run defense.

Alexander’s journey from a Southeastern Louisiana transfer to one of the SEC’s top cornerbacks, also demonstrates the work ethic and perseverance the Saints prioritize or should prioritize. With the right coaching, he has the potential to become an immediate contributor and a future Pro Bowler.

My current NFL Pro Comp for Zy Alexander is: current Dallas Cowboy CB Trevon Diggs, former Seahawks CB Byron Maxwell, and a taller version of former Falcons CB Robert Alford.

Why Draft Zy Alexander?

The Saints will be looking to rebuild their young secondary with players such as Alontae Taylor, Kool-Aid McKinstry, and Jordan Howden.

So why draft Zy Alexander? Alexander checks all the boxes: physicality, technique, and proven performances against elite competition. If he continues to develop, the Saints could land a high-value player in the later rounds who addresses a key need and elevates their secondary.

By investing in a local talent like Zy Alexander, the Saints would not only strengthen their defense but also bring a player familiar with the culture and expectations of Louisiana football. His skill set and attitude could make him a cornerstone of the team for years to come.
