Look out world, because we might just be looking at a future starting QB at state contender Franklin Parish.
Those are the aspirations of QB/DB Fred Williams, who is making the move from Crowville Junior High to the high school level this upcoming season. His combination of athleticism and mental capabilities will give him a chance to be a future signal caller, but even if that doesn’t work out, he’ll surely find a spot on the field to shine.
Fred is on the smaller side, standing only at 5’6″ 145 lbs right now, but all that does is give him a chip on his shoulder to compete with a level of aggression that you don’t normally see from a smaller player. It especially shows itself when he plays defensive back. As a corner, his aggressiveness makes him willing to tackle, shoring up a weakness that undersized DBs normally have. When you combine that with his speed and athletic ability to cover, and he becomes a great weapon for any secondary to use.
Williams will probably start playing high school football as a corner, but it’s at QB that he played in our bowl game. Fred plays point guard in basketball, and his experience as a distributor translates to his game as a QB. He is cerebral when he plays the game, and is seeking to understand and learn more about football every day. Even on an all-star team, Fred still found some playing time as a QB, which shows that his dream of being the starting quarterback one day at the high school level is something that can absolutely come true. No matter what position he ends up playing, we’ll be excited to watch him excel.
What got you into football in the first place? What was your first experience with it?
When I was growing up, we would play football in the backyard all the time. I just fell in love with it from there.
What was your favorite football game that you played in? What stood out about it?
Last year we played against the Franklin Parish Little Patriots. I got a chance to show the high school coaches what I could do.
How was your bowl game experience?
I enjoyed that I was playing against people I wanted to play against, seeing more talent than I saw when I was at Crowville. Going to the bowl game showed me that all these middle schools have talent.
What is your biggest strength on the field?
At quarterback, I have good speed and football IQ. At cornerback, I am aggressive.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned playing football throughout your life?
There is no I in team. Working together will build a better bond with my teammates.
When you’re watching, what teams do you root for?
I like Alabama because I like watching both their defense and their offense. I like watching LSU because they are my home team.
Is there an NFL or college player your try to model your game after?
Bryce Young and Koolaid McKinstrey.
What part of your game are you trying to improve on the most as you move to the high school level
I’m trying to improve on my technique and make my football IQ higher.
What sports do you play other than football?
I like playing basketball, where I play Point Guard.
What interests or hobbies do you have outside of sports?
I’m good at video games, especially Call of Duty and CFB 25.
What do you want to do when your playing days are over?
I want to become an entrepreneur, start my own clothing brand.
Why should fans keep their eye on you, Fred Edwards, as a Rising Star in Louisiana High School Football?
When people see me, they go based off my height. Because I’m small, they don’t think I can do what I can do.
