Southeastern Louisiana Football


The Southeastern Louisiana Lions of Hammond, LA are anticipating a great football season this year. With new Head coach Frank Scelfo, the team is looking to do very big things. Coach Scelfo has over 30 years of coaching experience, and he has spent 14 seasons coaching college football. Coach Scelfo is looking forward to helping his team not only be successful on the field but also in the classroom. Coach Ron Roberts who is the current defensive coordinator at UL, lead the team last season, finishing the season with a 6-3 conference standing and 6-5 overall standing for that season.  Last season Senior linebacker Sione Teuhema was named All-American by multiple organizations right along with Sophomore wide receiver/kick returner Juwan Petit-Frere. Returning quarterback Lorenzo Nunez was named Southland conference, new comer of the year.

 

The Lions have a rich history when it comes to football, Southeastern football began in the year 1930 with R Norval Garret, who was the first head coach for the team. Then in 1933-36 The first winning season for the team was with head coach A.L “Red” Swanson. They had their first unbeaten season with a record of 8-0-1, under coach Swanson. The team has multiple former players in the NFL, Robert Alford who is the cornerback for the Atlanta Falcons. Harlan Miller who is the safety for the Arizona Cardinals and Kevin Hughes who is the offensive tackle for the Carolina Panthers, just to name a few. Southeastern has 9 conference championships and has appeared in two of the I-AA/FCS playoffs since the year 1978. Strawberry stadium has been a home for the Lions since the beginning of football for southeastern, the 7,408 seat stadium is the perfect place for the fans to come out and enjoy watching their favorite team play. The field has been renovated with new turf, and the facility has a new visitor’s locker room, and a new press box with club seats and suites. Southeastern is preparing for a fantastic season this year, with an exciting season coming up featuring opponents like LSU and Louisiana-Monroe. Hoping to have their loyal fans ready to cheer them on in their green and gold.
