ULM Warhawks Football

The ULM Warhawks of Monroe, LA are looking forward to this upcoming season. Fans should get their maroon and gold gear ready. They are hopeful that Malone Stadium will hold some great entertaining football games this year. ULM has a beautiful campus located along the bayou and a stadium with a ProPlay field and seating that can hold over 30,000. Head coach Matt Viator and his team are coming into this season with spread offensive schemes and defensive schemes of 4-2-5. This is Matt Viator’s third year coaching this team.

Last season their record was 4-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play. ULM is in the Sun Belt Conference and is currently in a 5th place tie for their standing.  The Warhawks do have a prior championship game win under their belt. In 1987 the then Northeast Louisiana Indians, (now known as ULM Warhawks), won their first and only NCAA Division I-AA National Championship. They defeated their opponent Marshall by an ending score of 43-42. This championship team was coached by Pat Collins and they had a season record that year of 13-2.

The Warhawks whose team was established in 1931, have won 5 conference titles to date. Only one of these titles has been won since they changed the school name from Northeast Louisiana University Indians to University of Louisiana at Monroe Warhawks. The prior four titles were obtained when the team was still the NLU Indians. The ULM Warhakws have also taken on the Alabama Crimson Tide and come out victorious. In 2007 ULM played Alabama and won 21-14. This is a game that is considered “one of the most important wins in school history.”

In 2012 under head coach Todd Berry and quarterback Kolton Browning the Warhawks started their season by defeating the Arkansas Razorbacks 34-31 in overtime. In 2012 for the first time in the stadium’s history the tickets sold out and the stadium was filled with a record setting number of spectators and fans.

Last season starting quarterback Caleb Evans had 2878 yards passing with 17 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Also running back Derrick Gore had 585 yards rushing and 174 yards receiving. Safety Roland Jenkins had 54 solo tackles and 35 assisted tackles for a grand total of 89 tackles.

This upcoming season the Warhawks are looking to increase their winning record and have a great fan base at games.

This season there are many exciting games scheduled. For instance, they play powerful D1 schools such as Texas A&M, Arkansas State, and Ole Miss. They also have a home game at Malone Stadium planned for an old time rivalry against ULL Ragin’ Cajuns. We hope to see the Warhawks have a great season and come out victorious.
