School Spotlight: Escambia High

Escambia High is a traditional power house 6A football program located in Pensacola, Fl. Escambia is coached by my buddy coach Mike Bennett. I first met Mike is 2016 at an All-American Bowl game where he was the head coach on the opposing team. We used to joke back and forth about which state had more talent, Louisiana or Florida. Mike is actually a legend in Florida High School Football. He was named as 6A Coach of the Year as recently as 2020. Mike has led multiple teams to the state finals in Florida, and won a state title in 2009. Mike coaches with longtime friend Gary Cowart and son Brett Bennett. Escambia went 6-3 in 2021 going 2-2 in district play.

Akeem Stokes is a class of 2023 ATH. Akeem is 5’7″ and weighs 170 lbs. He may not be tall, but he is quick. The Gators us this young man in a number of packages where he will line up in the backfield or in the slot. I like how Akeem uses his speed to sidestep tacklers and make people miss.

Alfred Washington is a class of 2023 Tackle who is 6’4″ and weighs 269 lbs. Alfred plays hard and fires out of his stance. He does have good base power and quick feet.

Trevion Killette is a class of 2024 Free Safety. He is 6′ and weighs 178 lbs. Trevion is a pick machine. He has great field awareness and speed.

Ji´quez Minor is a class of 2023 Defensive Tackle. Ji’quez is 6’1″ and 330 lbs. I like his explosion off the line. He overpowers defenders and demands a double team, otherwise teams leave their backfield tot his 300 pounder. He makes good use of his hands to get off blocks and is simply hard to stop.

Isaiah Jones is a class of 2023 Guard. He is 6’3″ and weighs 308 lbs. He is a strong big body lineman with a nasty streak.

The Gators lost a lot of players in the 2022 class. However, they do have a decent size line returning and lot of young talent. I look for the Gators to have a strong season once again and compete for the district title.
