Madison Prep loses season opener against Brother Martin 17-0

Madison Prep Chargers kicked off their season opener against the Brother Martin Crusaders. The Charges led by head coach, Landry Williams traveled down to New Orleans to play in their first match of the season.

The Chargers received the opening kickoff of the game. After getting shut down and forced to punt on a 3rd and out, Brother Matin’s Torey Lambert started the game with a loud 35 yard rush. After getting stopped on a couple runs and an incomplete pass, Brother Martin opened the scoring with 24 yard field goal.

The rest of the first quarter was quiet for the most part. The chargers tried to get their offense going early after sophomore quarterback, Tylan Johnson completed a big 3rd conversion pass to Hezekiah Dantzler. After a couple of runs from Tony Lewis, the Chargers looked like they were gaining some momentum until a interception by the Crusader’s Gregory Jackson

In the second quarter the Chargers offense slowed down when their WR/CB, David Jones went down an injury. He did not end up returning into the game. With Jones out, the Chargers started to focus more on the run game with Lewis, Johnson and junior, Keilan Sherman. After a muffed snap on the punt, the Crusaders capitalized on the first touchdown of the game with 3 straight handoffs to Lambert totaling for 30 yards on the drive.

After going down 10-0, the Chargers were forced to 3 and out. The Crusaders offense were able to march down the field and ended the drive with a 18 yard screen pass to Torey Lambert with :18 seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the second half, The chargers run game was dominate for the most part but, the passing game just never got in rhythm. The Crusaders defensive line were physical and aggressive tonight, making it very difficult for Johnson to sit comfortable in the pocket and find his receivers. Madison’s offense tried to rally back but it was too late for them. The Crusader’s defense did a good job of containing Johnson and not letting him get out of the pocket and scramble .

The Chargers drop their first game but looking to get past that as they get ready for their next game versus Southern Lab away on Thursday, Sept. 8th.
