Jalen Milroe, Alabama Run All Over LSU in 42-28 Victory

For the most part of this pivotal SEC West matchup between LSU and Alabama, it looked like a Madden NFL video game that had Michael Vick on both sides of the football quarterbacking their teams.

Both quarterbacks in LSU’s Jayden Daniels and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe put on incredible shows, especially in the first half as both teams accounted for 42 total points through the first 30 minutes.

Daniels and Milroe eclipsed over 200 yards passing and 150 yards rushing a piece, which is the first time that has happened in a FBS game the last 25 years.

Daniels accounted for 382 total yards (219 passing, 163 rushing) and three total touchdowns, but it was Milroe that had the most complete game with the best rushing performance by an Alabama quarterback in school history with 20 carries for 155 yards and four touchdowns.

LSU could not stop Milroe all night long on the ground, especially on money downs as Alabama was 11 for 14 on third down. Milroe also was efficient through the air completing 15 of 23 passes for 219 yards to account for 374 total yards of offense.

After LSU took a 28-21 lead on the first drive of the second half, the game pretty much shifted towards Alabama the rest of the way as the Crimson Tide went on a 21-0 run to secure a 42-28 win over the Tigers.

To make matters worse, after having a dominant first half and being in the Heisman Trophy discussion, Daniels was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter after getting slammed down by Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner. Due to concussion protocol, the Tigers’ star quarterback was out for the game and Garrett Nussmeier had to finish out the rest of the way.

“Obviously, we have to put him through more testing before I can accurately say that was a concussion or not a concussion.”

LSU HC Brian Kelly on Jayden Daniels’ status moving forward

The game started looking like it was going to be a clone of the 2019 game between both these teams as LSU’s offense started the game blazing hot with a 46-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Malik Nabers.

Alabama got the lead with two touchdown runs by Milroe at 14-7, but LSU responded when Daniels ran it for a nine-yard touchdown run to tie the game.

It was a back and forth first half with Alabama scoring with a minute left before halftime, but Daniels put up an incredible one-minute drive in which he hit Kyren Lacy for a 26-yard touchdown to tie it at 21.

In the second half, LSU took the opening drive and marched right down the field as Jayden Daniels threw a dime to Malik Nabers down the sidelines for a big gain that later set up a Josh Williams touchdown to give the Tigers the lead.

However, Alabama got a tying score from Roydell Williams and then took the lead at 35-28 with Milroe’s fourth rushing touchdown.

There was one turnover in the game and that occurred at the start of the fourth quarter when Daniels’ pass was tipped and intercepted by Terrion Arnold. That allowed Alabama to give themselves a two-touchdown cushion with a Jase McClellan touchdown run at 42-28.

While both offenses moved the football, Alabama’s defense made the plays it needed to make in the second half by forcing two LSU punts, an interception, and a turnover on downs.

“We are playing a top ten team on the road. You can’t play good. We played good tonight. Good is not good enough. You have to play elite. You go on the road and play a top ten team. We didn’t play at a high enough level. It was a game that we needed to play better and needed to coach better. We knew that we were going on the road and playing a top ten team in their place. We didn’t reach that elite level tonight.”

LSU HC Brian Kelly on the loss

#8 Alabama (8-1, 6-0) has continued to show in SEC play to play their best and most complete football in second half of games in their conference schedule, and now, are in the driver seat of a SEC West title.

#14 LSU falls short of winning a second straight game against Alabama and now will fall to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the SEC. With the loss, the Tigers are out of contention for a SEC West championship. The goal moving forward for LSU would be to try and clinch a second straight ten-win season only if they can win out.

The final three games on LSU’s schedule will all be at home, and they will be against Florida, Georgia State, and Texas A&M.
