Although the final score suggests a one sided game, the battle that ensued at Wedge Keyes Stadium in Baker, Louisiana was anything but. In the first quarter the defenses were locked in, giving each other’s’ offenses trouble. The first score of the game, after four straight punts, occurred when Iota’s quarterback #9 Trae Rambin broke off a 27-yard touchdown run. The quarterback is tall, athletic and has a lefty cannon but where he struggles is his accuracy, usually missing high due to his ultra-strong arm. In an immediate response, senior wide receiver #3 Bryant Williams caught a 39-yard pass from quarterback #12 Tyren Henderson setting up the Buffaloes on the 1-yard line that was punched in for a touchdown by fullback #33 Travonte Spears. Williams also caught the two-point conversion following the touchdown and recording another catch of 25-yards later in the game. Williams is a tall, rangy wide receiver who has potential as a return specialist tallying two returns over 35-yards.
The entire second quarter was a defensive battle until the Bulldogs were in a 4th down situation. The Bulldogs had four yards to gain on the Baker 45-yard line with 2:14 left in the first half and decided on a wide receiver reverse to pick up the first down. The drive ended in a 37-yard field goal, sending the Iota Bulldogs into half with the lead 10-8.
The opening drive of the second half for Iota finished with a 50-yard touchdown run by running back #21 Kollin Guillory. Guillory had a superb game, rushing for over 150 yards including two rushing touchdowns. The Buffaloes would respond with 35-yard touchdown run by their star running back #20 Desmond Windon. Windon is a powerful, low center of gravity back that has incredible balance. This young man can flat out play some football. Windon finished with just under 150-yards, recording four runs over 20-yards.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs led the Buffaloes 17-14. After another hard fought quarter with very little offense, Iota had a chance to run out the clock. The Bulldogs got the ball on their own 35-yard line with under 4:00 minutes to play, driving the ball all the way down to the Baker 27-yard line converting multiple third downs in the process. With just over two minutes to go, Iota fullback #18 Luke Doucet gave the Iota Bulldogs a comfortable lead after a 27-yard touchdown run.
Although the Baker Buffaloes were not done just yet, after a nifty 50-yard hook and ladder play the home team had hope. Unfortunately, the Baker offense turned it over on downs giving Iota a chance with one first down to ice the game. Kollin Guillory had other plans. Guillory broke off a 74-yard touchdown to put the final nail in the coffin.
Although Baker’s season is over, this was an incredible game to watch. Iota will move onto the quarterfinals to face North Webster, which will more than likely be a home game for the Bulldogs.
