Gridiron Football Top 300: Ethan Thomason

Ethan Thomason is a Class of 2023 Offensive Tackle for Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, Colorado. At 6’8” 302 lbs, Ethan has a build that allows him to pummel the guy across from him play after play but, also to make the transition to the next level with ease. Thomason can be seen often taking defensive lineman all the way out of the frame of his Hudl highlights. He may be known for making an impact on offense, but you also have to worry about him on special teams as he blocked a few PAT’s last season. You can tell Ethan takes the term “student-athlete” very seriously as he currently has a 3.96 GPA. With his combination of size and strength, Ethan Thomason will be a player to look out for in his junior season.

Why did you choose to play football and when did you start? I have always been a big kid and loved football, I started playing around 4th grade.

What life skills has football taught you over time? Football has taught me to trust and rely on people on your team, and how to put in hard work.

Have you always played right tackle, or have you moved around? In middle school, I wasn’t fast enough, so I played guard, but now in high school I’m a tackle.

Where do you prefer the Defensive lineman to line up on you? Why? I would say I like a tight 5, so I can get my hands on him and utilize my length.

Favorite part about playing on the offensive line? Definitely demoralizing the guy in front of me. 

Do you have a favorite play to run? I like any play where I can come off of double teams and hit the linebacker.

I see you often pancake the guy in front of you, what are some techniques you use to do this? I like to get my hands on them and run them, pull them closer and when they have lost balance, I throw them.

What are some advantages you think you gain with your size? I definitely gain advantages in pass pro, I can handle guys who have lots of speed off the edge with my length, and it helps me physically dominate someone.

In your film, I saw you blocked a PAT, do you want to make special team contributions at the next level? For sure, wherever they need me.

What current or past player, do you think your game mirrors the most? Taylor Lewan, beast on the field, similar build.

Does your jersey number (78) hold any significance to you? Not really, I liked 77 but they didn’t have that at my size, I plan on using it at the next level. 

Do you play any sports outside of football? If so, how have they helped you become better on the gridiron? Basketball, it helped me with my footwork, speed, and helped me stay conditioned.

Outside of sports, do you have any hobbies you like to do? I like to play the guitar.

What is your favorite pre-game song to listen to? I don’t have a specific song; I just listen to a playlist.

In your opinion, what is the best aspect of your game?My mentality, I love to destroy people.

How do you think Covid-19 impacted your sophomore season? We had a shorter season and shorter playoff bracket, unfortunately didn’t make the playoffs because of that.

Do you have any goals for your junior season? I want to make all state and conference.

At the end of the day, who is someone you look up to? My dad, he’s a great example on how to be a hard worker, helps me eat right and get to workouts.

Describe a time where you were going through adversity, how did you get through it? This year being stuck at home with gyms being closed, I found a great trainer and was able to train at home.

Finally, what are colleges going to get out of Ethan Thomason? Colleges are going to get a handworker, good student, and a mean guy on the football field.
