D.I.T.R: Skylar Husband – CB

Skylar Husband is a 6’1″ 170 pound cornerback at Petal High School in Petal, Mississippi – directly northwest of Hattiesburg. He is a defensive back that shows great speed and size at the position. Husband is exceptional at locking down receivers and tracking the ball in the air. He did not allow any touchdowns as a corner in his junior year at Petal High School. Skylar Husband will be a senior for the 2023 football season, graduating in the 2024 class. I had the opportunity to speak with Skylar about his career so far, as well as his plans for the future:

Q: Tell me about yourself, where you grew up and such?

I grew up in a small town of Richton, Mississippi. It is actually about 15 minutes north of where I moved this summer. I moved to a 6a school, growing up I went to a small 1a school. I have been playing varsity ball since 8th grade. I came to Petal last season as a junior and have been playing cornerback, safety, and a little wide receiver.

Q: When did you start playing football?

I have been playing football since probably 5 years old or before that. I started with flag football then gradually moved up.

Q: Do you play any sports other than football?

I actually was a four-sport athlete but when I came to Petal I decided to focus more on football and track. I run the 400 meter and the 4×4. During the summer I am working out in the weight room and staying in shape for football season.

Q: What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced playing football, and how did you overcome that?

Not always having winning seasons can be challenging. Last year we went into the season with very high hopes but unfortunately that did not go the way we wanted it. All the guys on the team from last year are really working hard this offseason to make sure that does not happen again, and improve on our mistakes from last year.

Q: What is your favorite part about playing cornerback?

I enjoy playing man to man coverage, knowing I got my guy – Being on the number one receiver. I like the contact and I’m not afraid to hit, not just a cover guy.

Q: What is something you have learned from football that can translate to the rest of your life?

Leadership, and it takes everyone to do their part in order to win. You always have to keep good spirits, you gotta play the next play and keep a short term memory. Keep working hard and never be satisfied.

Q: Is there anyone you look up to on the football field, whether it is a current or former player?

I am a really big Emmanuel Ford fan, the way he ballhawks – and Sauce Gardner. It is pretty hard to pick between those two. On the physical side I would have to say Jalen Ramsey.

Q: What are some of your dream colleges or universities you would like to visit or attend?

Since I was a young kid I have always had my eye on SEC schools. I have heard from Ole Miss and Mississippi State, the local teams. Overall, SEC schools would be really cool to see.

Q: What strengths do you believe you have that can make you an impact athlete at the next level?

Leadership; I am going to give everything I got every time I am in the weight room or on the football field. Whatever my coaches think I am good at or where I can help the team at, I am willing to do whatever it is in order for the team to win. I am a hard worker that is comfortable on the field because I have been playing all my life.

Q: How would your teammates describe you?

I think they would say I am a leader and that I try to push them. I make sure they try to hold me accountable as well. I try to give everything I got during the workouts and on Friday nights.

Q: What are you looking forward to this upcoming season, any specific goals for you?

I look forward to rack up a few more offers whether it is in the spring or during the season. I would like to get some touchdowns on offense as well as defense. I would like to get a good amount of interceptions and tackles. I want to hopefully get some wins this next season to make a playoff push for my last year at Petal.

Skylar says he could not have gotten this far without his corner coach. Payten Green has helped Skylar along the entire way. “He’s helped me be a better person and a better athlete. He is a big reason why I can trust my technique and pushes me to my limits.”

Skylar Husband is an exceptional talent at the cornerback position. This 6’1″ DB has speed that can keep up with any receiver, and size to combat one on one situations. He is a fierce competitor that has what it takes to compete at a high level. Not only is Skylar a top athlete on the field, he also holds an impressive 3.9 GPA. Husband is an exciting young athlete in the class of 2024 worth keeping an eye on. Skylar will be a senior playing football for Petal High School this upcoming fall.
