D.I.T.R: Marcus Mcdaniel – Center

Marcus Mcdaniel is a 6’3″ 250 pound center at Humphreys County High School – located in the small town of Belzoni, Mississippi. Mcdaniel grew up in Belzoni, and began to play football in the 7th grade. Marcus is a crucial factor on the offense, as the Cowboys are a very run heavy team. In the Wing-T offense, he is able to use his speed and mobility as a lineman to help block crucial defenders up the middle. In his junior season Mcdaniel was named 1st team offense for 3A District 3. This impressive, athletic center is in the class of 2024, and will have one more season to compete at Humphreys County High School. I had the opportunity to speak with Marcus about his young career thus far. Check out Marcus Mcdaniel’s junior year highlights, and our interview below:

Q: When did you start playing football?

I started playing football in 7th grade, straight into tackle football. I played on the line as a tackle and center.

Q: Do you play any sports other than football?

I play basketball and baseball as well. I am a center in basketball and play catcher in baseball.

Q: What are some of your favorite aspects about playing the position of center?

I just love dominating people. I like being physical and being mean. I like to come off the ball fast and hit with a full head of stream. I like to protect my quarterback.

Q: Opposite of that, what has been one of the biggest challenges for you playing center, and how have you overcome that?

At first I was kind of scared. I had to learn as I go. As I was playing the position, I was in the weight room. I started dominating in the weight room, kept going harder, harder, and harder until I overcame that fear.

Q: What are some strengths you believe you have that make you an impact athlete?

For my position, I have excellent speed and strength. You do not see many centers that can run a 4.8 40. I can read defenses well. I catch on really quick.

Q: Do you have someone you look up to on the football field at your position, whether it is a current or former player?

I look up to Jason Kelce on the Eagles, number 62. I like his experience and how he has worked to get to the point of where he is now.

Q: What motivates you to be a better football player?

My teammates, my coaches, my community, and especially my mother.

Q: How would your teammates describe you?

The look up to me as their leader. I keep them focused and keep them in line.

Q: What are you looking forward to this upcoming season, any specific goals for you?

I want to make it to the Magnolia All-Star game, or any All-Star game for that matter.

Q: Is there someone who has helped you along the way, and has mentored you either in life or in football?

My uncle; he has really helped out by keeping me in line, taking me to college visits.
