College Football Preview: Southern University Homecoming Game Versus Alabama A&M

It is homecoming week for the Southern University Jaguars and they are looking to bring their fans a win in A.W. Mumford Stadium. Not only is every home game an exciting experience for the fans and players alike but homecoming is a different beast. Southern’s campus becomes flooded with people, booming with music, filled with an unmatched energy, and the band provides a performance unlike any other. The Jaguars (4-4) will be facing Alabama A&M (5-3) who are second in the SWAC East under Alcorn State, the Jaguars latest loss.

The Bulldogs lost to the Jaguars last year by 2 points and have only won two of the nine match-ups since 2010. They clearly have a stronger passing game when comparing to their rushing as they average about 156 more yards per game. The Bulldogs main threat for rushing is Jordan Bentley which will definitely be someone the Jaguars keep their eye on as well as Moore and Ibrahim on the receiving end. Another threat Alabama has is their quarterback, Aqeel Glass, as he was a second-team selection all-SWAC in 2018 as a sophomore. The Bulldogs should be a fair and challenging opponent for the Jaguars as they have just come off a win against Alabama State.

The Southern University Jaguars are coming back from a game on the road against their exciting match-up, Alcorn State. The Jaguars did lose this game but the Braves are never expected to be an easy opponent. Coach Odums has previously highlighted the fact that his football team works as a business and treats every opponent equally meaning the team has reset and getting ready to take on the Bulldogs. The Jaguars not only have a home field advantage, are looking to keep their spot on top of SWAC West, but they also feel the responsibility of defending their homecoming game. The support, school spirit, and thunderous energy will be a force for the Bulldogs to reckon with before even facing their true opponents on the field. The Jaguars have displayed versatility and the ability to interchange players and still perform at a competitive level. Not only do they have Ladarius Skelton as a dual threat quarterback but time and time again Glendon McDaniel has come into the game and been able to change the momentum. This is a tremendous advantage for the Jaguars as they are able to have two solid quarterbacks with the ability to consistently connect with their offense. One top of that, the Bulldogs still have to worry about Devon Benn on rush attempts and others receiving leaders such as Hunter Register, Timothy Bedford, and Brandon Hinton. The Jaguars are real threat when their offense finds their rhythm and the defense is able to hold their opponents. The defense of Southern has had their ups and down this season but have been able to stop most of their competitors this season. If the defense starts off strong as they have in the past they will be a force to be reckoned with especially when feeding off the hype and energy being given in their home stadium.

Be sure to support your Southern University Jaguars this weekend as they take on the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. Even if you can’t make it to the game be sure to make your way to campus for some good music, great people, and even better food to get the true SU Homecoming Experience!
