Tulane Football Announces Three Mid-Year Signings for 2017

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane football head coach Willie Fritz announces the signing of three junior college transfers for the 2017 season.

Quarterback Jonathan Banks, offensive lineman Dominique Briggs and wide receiver Jabril Clewis will join the Green Wave in January and participate in spring practice beginning in March.

JONATHAN BANKS – QB, 6-3, 220, Jr., Humble, Texas (Aldine Nimitz HS/Independence CC)
Banks heads to Tulane with two years of eligibility remaining. This past season at Independence Community College in Kansas, he passed for 1,338 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for 615 yards and seven touchdowns in nine games directing the Pirates’ offense. The Humble, Texas, native spent the 2015 season at Kansas State as a redshirt after joining the Wildcats following a season at Contra Costa College in Texas where he led the Comets to nine-straight wins in 2014.

Fritz on Banks: “Jonathan is a multi-talented quarterback who can both pass and run the ball effectively. He has good size, good arm strength and good speed. We’re excited that he will be able to be here this spring, pick our offense up and compete for a starting position.”

DOMINIQUE BRIGGS – OL, 6-3, 295, Jr., Tulsa, Okla. (Tulsa Union HS/Coffeyville  CC)
Briggs joins the Green Wave with two years of eligibility remaining. He spent two seasons at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas where he spent time on both sides of the ball. As a freshman playing on the defensive line, he recorded 31 tackles (3 solo) and 0.5 sacks in six games. As a sophomore playing on the offensive line, the Tulsa, Okla., native started at center in all nine games and recorded one assisted tackle in the Red Ravens’ season.

Fritz served as defensive coordinator at Coffeyville from 1987-90 and helped guide the Red Ravens to a junior college national championship in 1990.

Fritz on Briggs: “Dominique comes from a great high school program in Tulsa Union High School and played at a perennial junior college power in Coffeyville. He has a great work ethic and really enjoys practicing and playing the game. We look for him to be a contributor at the center or guard positions on the offensive line.”

JABRIL CLEWIS – WR, 6-2, 190, Jr., San Diego (Patrick Henry HS/Grossmont College)
Clewis heads to Tulane with two years of eligibility remaining. At Grossmont College in El Cajon, Calif. this past season, he hauled in 34 catches for 600 yards and four touchdowns. The San Diego native spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as a redshirt at San Diego State.

Fritz on Clewis: “Jabril has great size, speed and physicality as a receiver. We wanted to get bigger at the receiver position and we certainly did with the addition of Jabril.  He also will have the advantage of being here in the spring to compete for a starting job.”
