Travon Long Named ASC Player of the Week

For the second time this season a Louisiana College defensive player has been recognized for his efforts on the field by the American Southwest Conference. Senior cornerback Travon Long was chosen as co-defensive player of the week, the conference office announced on Sunday. He shares this week’s honor with Belhaven’s Colton Strain.

On an afternoon where the Wildcat offense set a single game record with 750 yards of offense, it was Long that helped lead the LC defense with his best performance as a Wildcat. Duke forced two HPU turnovers in the game. He picked off Yellow jacket quarterback Gage McClanahan in the third quarter and on a sack in the fourth, stripped the ball loose from the QB recovering the fumble. He added another 1.5 tackles for loss, among his eight total stops in the game, and broke up another pass for the game.

The senior from Lutcher finished the season with 29 total tackles finding himself among the team leaders in plays behind the line of scrimmage. The corner had 6.0 tackles for loss this season, third most on the team, while leading the Wildcats with three interceptions on the year. He leapt to the top of the team leader board in that category with three interceptions over the last three weeks of the season.

The Wildcats finished the season with their first non-losing record and first winning mark in ASC play since 2014. All-conference awards will be announced in the coming week from the ASC office.
