The Journey Begins: SLU Opens Fall Practice Tuesday

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana football team will officially begin preparations for the upcoming 2017 season on Tuesday, as fall camp opens with a 7 p.m. practice under the lights of Strawberry Stadium.

The 2017 Lions reported to campus on Monday. With just over a month until the Sept. 2 season opener at UL Lafayette, Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts’ squad will hit the ground running.

Roberts enters his sixth season at the helm of the Southeastern program and has led SLU to a 36-24 record and a pair of Southland Conference championships. After a disappointing 2015, the Lions bounced back in 2016, finishing 7-4 overall and 7-2 in Southland Conference play.

Southeastern was playing its best at the end of last season, as the Lions won six of their final seven contests – including the final three. A large portion of SLU’s All-Southland Conference contingent returns, as junior running back Julius Maracalin, senior linebacker Sione Teuhema, senior wide receiver Juwan Dickey, senior offensive lineman Travis Romero, senior defensive back Torrance Mosley and senior defensive back Max Lyons all return to lead a Lion roster that features experience on both sides of the ball.

All of the practices over the first two weeks of camp will be held at 7 p.m. as Southeastern attempts to avoid the daytime heat. School begins on Aug. 16 and that week the Lions will switch to a 3:30 p.m. daily practice.

The first scrimmage of the fall is set for Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. In conjunction with the scrimmage, Southeastern will hold the second Kickoff Appreciation event.

The event is scheduled for 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Billups Room and is open to 2017 football season ticket holders only. Fans wishing to purchase season tickets, parking passes or Billups Room passes or join the Touchdown Club will have the opportunity to do so at the event. Refreshments will be available at the event and for more information on the event or to purchase season tickets, fans can contact the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466.

The second scrimmage of the season is set for Aug. 19 in 7 p.m. Earlier that day, Southeastern will hold its annual Media Day at 2 p.m. in the Victory Club. The following week will begin a regular game week schedule with no practice on Monday and 3:30 p.m. practices.

Following the Sept. 2 opener at the Ragin’ Cajuns, the Lions will open its 2017 home schedule on Sept. 9 with a 7 p.m. contest versus Bethune-Cookman. Other visitors to Hammond this season, include Southland foes Lamar (Sept. 23), Incarnate Word (Oct. 7 – Homecoming), Sam Houston State (Oct. 28) and Nicholls (Nov. 16).

In addition to the trip to Lafayette, Southeastern will travel to face league opponents Central Arkansas (Sept. 16), Northwestern State (Sept. 30), Houston Baptist (Oct. 14), Abilene Christian (Oct. 21) and McNeese (Nov. 4).
