School Spotlight: Noxubee County

Noxubee County High School is found the small town of Macon, Mississippi. Noxubee is a pollinial power house football team. Since 2007, the Tigers have won 5 state titles in 4A football, and been state runner-up 3 times. This squad has had two undefeated season in 2008 and 2012. In 2008, the Tigers went 14-0 and was ranked number 28 football team in the nation. Again in 2012, this team was undefeated going 16-0 and was the number 1 football team in the state. The Tigers also won state titles in 2014, 2015, and 2017 under former head coach Tyrone Shorter. The current Head Coach Teddy Young is the current leader of this team who has lead this team to back-to-back state runner-up in 2019-2020.

This program has produced numerous NFL and College Football prospects. Nate Wayne, former Denver Bronco Super Bowl Champion and Green Bay Packer is a graduate of Noxubee County High before attending Ole Miss. Current NFL superstar Defensive End Jeffery Simmons, plays for the Tennessee Titans played for the Tiger before attending Mississippi State and becoming the #19 overall pick in the 2019 Draft.

Who will be the next big time prospect from Macon? I spoke to QB coach Deangelo Ballard about the current prospects and he said that this is a very talented program and proud to be apart of the success. Deangelo played for Noxubee in the 2012 State Championship.

Lineman Bryson Kelly is a class of 2023 prospect that is a 3 year starter and a 3x All-District player. Bryson is 6’3″ and weighs 300 lbs. Bryson is a dominate lineman that plays with excellent pad height. Great form and use of hands. Strong and physical player.

Receiver Anthony Little Jr. is a class of 2023 prospect that is a 3 year starter and 3x All-District player. Coach Ballard said, “Anthony is probably the best rout runner in the state, he creates separation both in the slot and on the outside.” Anthony is 6′ and 198 lbs. Anthony has great game speed and excellent hands.

Defensive Back Shunterrion Sherrod is a class of 2023 prospect that is a 2 year starter, 2x All-District, and one time All-State player. Coach Ballard said, ” this is the smartest football player I ever cached.” Last year in the 2nd round of the playoffs, Sherrod had a career high of 26 tackles in the game. Sherrod is 5’10” and 165 lbs. Great speed and all round receiver.

Lineman James Mayo is a class of 2023 prospect that made All-District his first year playing varsity in 2021. James is a very aggressive player that is strong and has good use of his hands.

Quarterback Kamario Taylor is a class of 2025 prospect. He played in only played 1 game in 2021 but he went 5 for 6 and had 2TDs. Coach Ballard said, “this kid is a big time prospect. He has a big time arm, good feet, and is a natural leader.”

Receiver Dequadrion Welch is a class of 2024 prospect. Welch is 5’9″ 157 lbs. Coach Ballard said, “”DJ” is big play receiver, our 3rd down receiver, and our smartest receiver on team He returns kicks and is tackle breaking machine. This kid is always putting the work in.”

The Tigers will be starting their spring ball on April 25th. There is a lot of excitement building in Macon this year. Come check out this program and their top prospects.
