Canyon Lake High School-located in Fischer, Texas-plays in the 4A classification of Texas high school football. They are ranked as the #385 team in the state, and the #34 team in the 4A classification in the state. The Hawks, whose colors are forest green and vegas gold, are led by coach Louis Drum. Coach Drum helped leads the Hawks to a 7-4 record and winning their district. Canyon Lake won a playoff game defeating Uvalde High School before losing to a tough Calhoun team. Talking to Coach Drum, there were a couple of things that we talked about regarding the Canyon Lake program.

Coach Louis Drum

Talking to Coach Drum, I asked what is the identity of the Canyon Lake Hawks. The identity of this team is that they have kids who are blue collar workers and tough. They do not have the biggest or fastest kids like many teams in the state have. However, it is an absolute battle every time that opponents play the Canyon Lake Hawks. They get after it every down each game, and they are not afraid of any physicality. Their identity helps them run their offense and defense. Offensively, they run the slot-t offense where they run the ball majority of the game. They want to wear down the opposing defense by running it and gaining those 3-4 yards. Defensively, they run a 4-2-5 where they focus on controlling the line of scrimmage with good tackling. They have hard-nosed kids on both sides of the ball who are not afraid of their opponents, and stay physical on both sides of the ball.

Talking about the future of this program with Coach Drum, he got excited thinking of what the Hawks will look like in the next couple of years. They have been to the playoffs 10 years in a row, and their next goal is to make it pass the third round and play in December. They are going to be replacing a lot of players with their whole offensive line going to be new this upcoming year. This team is going to be young and will experience a learning curve, but Coach Drum is positive that there will not be a steep drop off from last year’s team. They are excited to tackle spring football, and continue the hard work that they have poured in year round.
