Diamond in the Rough: Jaden Handy

Jaden Handy is a running back from Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, LA. Handy stands at 5’10 and weighs in at a bulking 200 pounds. The 2021 prospect split time between receiver and running back during his junior season, but tells me his senior year he will be back in the backfield getting a bulk of the carries. Watching his film you can see his shiftiness and catching ability from the slot position. Handy coming out of the backfield is even more impressive. Running behind his pads he is able to lower the boom on defenders or use his elusiveness to run around them. The recent Tulane commit currently has a 425 pound squat, 315 pound clean and 300 pound bench press. The 2021 recruit also has a 3.3 core GPA.

What age did you start playing football?

I’ve always played football with my older cousins. I was always more talented than them, but they really pushed me. Like racing, like who could throw the ball the furthest. But I started playing really when I was five. I played for the SYFA (Slidell Youth Football Association)

Did you play any other sports growing up?

Basketball, when I was younger, I was outside playing with the older guys all day. It was with guys that playing mostly playing for colleges now.

Did you always play running back or did you play any other positions?

When I was growing up, I played quarterback, running back, and a little safety.

Going back to last year, what were your goals?

I wanted to repeat what I did my tenth grade year, because my tenth grade year I had a thousand plus yards. I wanted to improve on that, and do better than what I did. But, I was moved to receiver due to injuries on the team. I will be moving back to playing strictly running back this year though.

Who would you say are some of your biggest influences?

My father and Matt Forte. Forte because he came up from the same part that I did.

Who would you say your favorite NFL player is?

Right now, I would say it’s Alvin Kamara. Kamara relates to my game the most. He’s an all-around back, can catch out the backfield. Great balance, great at screens. All time is Eric Dickerson because he’s a workhorse, and I feel that represents me at the end of the day.

What would you say motivates you the most?

I can’t fail, failure isn’t an option. I want to be the first in my family to go to the NFL. I want to be able to go as for as I want to in life. I want to be the guy that makes it to the NFL. I have another plan, but in my mind, it’s like I got to make it to the NFL for the family.

What have you been doing to keep yourself in shape during the quarantine?

I’ve been working out most days with my trainer Albert Brock, we call him “AB.” We work on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. If we’re not working out with AB I’m working at my house or in the park by myself. I’ll usually run around the neighborhood until I get tired.

On a scale of 1-10, what would your ideal performance number be on game day?

A 10! Every game I give it all I got. Every game there is no one through nine, it’s 10 every time.

At the end of this year, what would you want your coaches and teammates to say about you?

That he was the best running back that I ever played with. That he was prepared all the time. Also, I would want them to say that I am a leader a hard worker, and that I made everyone around me better.

If you weren’t playing football, what sport do you think you would be playing?

I don’t even know, honestly. Football is all I really know.
