We continue our Rising Star series with another key component of Team Central’s victory, OL/DL Brees Morphis. Brees played DL at Jena Junior High this past year, but he played OL at our bowl game, where he was one of the bruisers in the trenches helping Tyler Simpson to his MVP performance. Everyone showers the running back with all the glory, but it’s performances from players like Brees Morphis that helped get him there.
Brees is new to the game of football, but he has picked it up quickly and already has a knack for it. He’s a big guy (already 5’10” 235 lbs) with the physicality needed to survive in the trenches at the high school level. Most impressive as of now is the toughness he shows throughout the play. He is willing to fight all the way through the whistle, and shows no signs of quit even if the play doesn’t start going his way. There were a lot of plays throughout the bowl game where he wouldn’t necessarily get the best first step and would absorb a big hit at the beginning of the play, but then he managed to stay on his feet and keep his block in spite of that because of his tenacity and balance.
There is still a lot to learn with his technique, but he’s already shown the ability to master a physical skill quickly. He is a former black belt in Taekwondo, managing to achieve the impressive feat in just three years of training. If he can be a black belt in three years, imagine what he’ll be as a lineman after three years of high school football. As he keeps growing physically and in the game of football, the sky is truly the limit for Brees Morphis.

What got you into football in the first place?
I went to a private school in my hometown, and I thought I was big enough, so I wanted to try it. I was just getting out of basketball at the time. We moved to the public school and I just decided to try it.
What have you learned in your first year playing football?
I’ve learned about responsibility and keeping track of myself.
How was your experience in the bowl game?
It gave me a lot of opportunities to see who I was going up against, getting to know my teammates, and seeing how other schools compared against us. I learned more things than just from my school. The coaches were really good, they taught me and helped me out a lot.
What was your favorite game you played this season? What stood out about it?
My favorite game was the 2nd game we played, against Winnfield. I got a lot of playing time and two tackles, and it’s when I felt like I got control of my position on the field.
You play both offensive line in the bowl game and Defensive Line in the Junior High Season. Which did you enjoy more?
I liked doing offensive line more, but I’ll play wherever my coach thinks is best for me.
What is your biggest strength on the field?
Thinking. I try to think on the field, deciding what approach would let me do something the best.

What teams do you root for when you watch sports?
LSU, Saints, Bengals.
What do you want to improve on the most going into High School?
I want to improve my arm strength, especially if I start playing offensive line more, I’m going to have to use my arms and upper body a lot.
What sports do you play other than football?
I played basketball a lot growing up, but football is becoming my main focus. If I do play basketball, it will be to improve my footwork and speed. I also plan on doing powerlifting.
What goals do you have when you get to High School?
I want to play football all the way through, and possibly get a scholarship for playing it. I want to get good grades and keep those grades up.
What’s your favorite part about playing football?
Tackling. Before football, I had bad anger issues. Now I get to let my anger out on someone.
What do you plan to do when your playing days are over?
I would like to go to school for computer programming. I feel like I’m smart enough to do it.
Why should fans keep their eyes on you, Brees Morphis, as a Rising Star in Louisiana High School Football?
They shouldn’t underestimate me. I have a lot of potential. I’m only in my first year of playing football in the 8th grade, and I would say I’m doing really well, so just don’t give up. If you’re passionate about something, keep doing it.
