Louisiana College vs Belhaven

The Wildcats return to Wildcat Field this week after a long trip to West Texas that resulted in the team’s third loss of the season and second in as many weeks. LC had their least productive day of the season offensively against Sul Ross, resulting in their lowest point total of the year.  As a team the Wildcats were only able to gain 300 yards of offense and were held to 66 rushing yards in the game.  The turnover bug once again hurt the team as twice the offense would give the ball back to the Lobos inside the Sul Ross 10-yard line, ending promising scoring drives in the process.

With this week’s opponent, the pass happy Belhaven Blazers, the Louisiana College defensive unit, specifically the secondary, will be but to their biggest test of the season.  Belhaven comes into the game as the conference’s most prolific passing offense, averaging over 400 yards through the air per game.  They have attempted 378 passes through six games, over 110 more than LC, the next highest number of attempts in the conference.  Through the first four games of the year the LC defense had 18 takeaways including 10 interceptions, but in the last two games against Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross they have only one, an interception on the last play of the first half against the Cowboys.

The air raid offense of head coach Hal Mumme and quarterback Hunter McEachern will test the WIldcats defensive secondary this week.  If the front four are able to apply continuous pressure, with team sack leaders Cade Maxwell off the edge and Keidrick Vance inside, the Wildcats will be in a much better position to contain the Blazers than if McEachern is allowed to sit back and survey the field on each attempt.

After a hot start to the season scoring almost 200 points in the first four games, the Wildcats offense has struggled the last two weeks, only putting 35 points on the board in two games. The solution for the Wildcats has been a tough one to find, as Easton Melancon still ranks second in the ASC in passing, and Aurren Cooksey leads the conference with over 600 rushing yards.  One issue the Wildcats have struggled with all year has been turnovers.  LC has turned the ball over to their opponents on their opening possession in four of the six games this year.  In the last two weeks three different turnovers happened inside the opponents 10-yard line.

This week the offensive staff adjusted the practice schedule and pace in hopes to spark the Wildcats and get the team off to a better start in the game against Belhaven. The Blazers rank last in the ASC in the three major defensive categories, scoring defense, passing defense, and rushing defense.  The Wildcats have multiple play makers on the field with every snap, that have a lot of playing experience, and the offense will rely on those play makers to set the tone early for the rest of the game and take advantage of each opportunity with the football.

LC takes on Belhaven this Saturday at Wildcat Field with kickoff scheduled for 6pm.  It is also Military Appreciation Day, and military personnel from all branches are encouraged to attend with their families, there will be a special presentation at halftime.  General admission tickets are available at the gate for $10 and gates open 90 minutes before kickoff.
