Jaguars Dominate the Bulldogs in first SWAC Game

In an outstanding turn of events, the Southern University Jaguars (2-2) beat the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (1-3) in their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA. Despite an early touchdown for the Jaguars from sophomore quarterback John Lampley to senior tight end Dennis Craig, the Jags trailed the Bulldogs for the majority of the first half. Junior running back Jordan Bentley scored twice for the Bulldogs helping them take the early lead in the first half. Along with Jordan Bentley, Keldric Johnson was able to help the Bulldogs by receiving a 36-yard pass from freshman quarterback Aqueel Glass to put the Bulldogs in the lead with a score of 21-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter showed promise for the Jaguars with a newfound source of momentum. Bulldogs running back Jordan Bentley ran a loss of 1 yard for a safety for the Jaguars, boosting the Jags drive and score. A 77-yard drive finished by a pass from John Lampley to Devon Benn put the Jaguars back in the game with an 11-yard touchdown. Now just a one possession game, the Jags were able to keep the spark going and score another two touchdowns, by Devon Benn and Jarmarqueza Mims, to put them on top of the Bulldogs 29-21 at the end of the third quarter. The Jaguars were able to hold the Bulldog defense to one touchdown for the remainder of the game, denying the attempted 2-point conversion that would have tied the score. The Southern University Jaguars came out on top with a final score of 29-27 over the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. The Jaguars prepare themselves for next week’s homecoming game at A.W. Mumford Stadium against the Alcorn State Braves. This will be the Jag’s second SWAC game for the season.
