Diamond in the Rough: Desmon Washington

St. Mary Parish is infused with unquestionable talent on the gridiron. West St. Mary’s Desmon Washington is someone that should not be overlooked. The senior running back is a leader on the football field with an outstanding work ethic and admirable personality. Washington stands 5’11” and weighs 183 lbs. He benches 305 lbs, squats 345 lbs, and deadlifts 250 lbs. Desmon maintains a 3.0 gpa and also holds the position of outside linebacker.

Desmon recently played a remarkable game against Delcambre High. Washington rushed for 261 yards and four touchdowns. The Wolfpack secured the 48-0 victory and it could not have been done without him. When I asked about this game Washington’s response was, “Delcambre was one of the best games I’ve played this year. Every time I got my hands on the ball I was looking to score. That’s why I gained so many yards”. He successfully demonstrated his mindset on the football field that night and produced some incredible results.

Washington has been playing football since he was 6 years old. When I asked why does he play football, he simply answered “Because I love the sport”. Desmon’s favorite football player is Le’Veon Bell. He admires his athleticism and how he not only dominates but revolutionizes the game of football.

Desmon has been fortunate to earn all-district awards for the sport he loves. I asked Washington what school would he like to attend and his response was “Mississippi State”. He wants to study Computer Technician and Sports Medicine. Washington wrapped up the interview by saying “I’m dedicating this season to my mother and father for always supporting me”.

You all already know my sentiments about people from small towns and their big dreams. They do not just harvest these dreams, they work hard to make them come true.  One of my recent “diamonds”, Daylon Richard, is Washington’s fellow teammate. It came as no surprise to me that the two share the same hungry but humble personality. The Wolfpack’s season may have started out slow but with Desmon on the roster I see things heating up for this team. As always, I am looking forward to what Washington and the Wolfpack have in store for the remainder of this season. Good luck, Desmon!
