L.W. Higgins received the ball first on offense to start the game, where a short kickoff gave the Hurricanes a short field to begin play. Marquell Addison of Higgins recorded the first reception of the game, hauling in a medium gain of 9 yards as the Hurricanes crossed into Tiger territory. Following the reception, the Hahnville defense came up big with tackles for loss by DE Adonis Friloux and MLB John Pearsall, two players who swallowed up tackles all night for Hahnville. On 3rd and 8, the Hurricanes looked to the air but failed to complete their pass due to tight coverage from Hahnville’s senior CB Syre Lewis, forcing a punt. A high snap launched the ball over the head of the Higgin’s punter, causing a scramble for the football which would be recovered by John Pearsall at the Higgin’s 26 yard line.
The Tiger offense started off a bit sluggish. Hahnville QB Drew Naquin was sacked on a 2nd and 8, bringing up a long 3rd down conversion for the Tiger offense. Instead of going to the air, Naquin handed the ball off to 6’ 195lb senior RB Darryle Evans, who found the edge and sprinted his way to the endzone on a 28 yard score, providing the first points from scrimmage and a 7-0 Tiger lead.
Higgins offense sputtered on their second possession, not being able to generate much on the ground against the stout tiger front 7. On a 3rd down try, Higgins attempted a screen that was thrown incomplete but behind the line of scrimmage, resulting in a huge loss and a 4th down and 20. A good return by Hahnville returner Alijah Hamilton set the Tiger offense up in prime field positions, as Hamilton took the punt into Higgins territory before being brought down at the Hurricane 32.
Darryle Evans got back in business for Hahnville, breaking tackles on the opening play for a strong gain of 7, then followed up with another bruising run for a Hahnville 1st down as they crossed into the redzone. The Tigers stuck to the run game with Evans, leading to an 11 yard touchdown run as the senior running back barrelled his way into the endzone for his second rushing score of the night.
The Hurricane offense began testing the run with Jerann Washington Jr., but found little room between the tackles as the Tiger D locked down on Higgins’ run game. Marquell Addison was targeted again on 2nd down, but was unable to come down with the pass forcing a 3rd and 9. Washington Jr. tried to find space on the 3rd down try, but yet again was met by MLB John Pearsall, resulting in a tackle for loss and other 4th and long. Hahnville returned the punt for significant yardage and excellent field position for a second time in a row, this time from returner Jerry Spencer, setting up the Tiger offense inside the redzone at the Hurricane’s 24.
Drew Naquin of Hahnville picked up a few modest gains through the air, along with Evans picking up a few on the ground, however, on a 3rd down attempt, the Tigers were penalized for an ineligible receiver downfield, resulting in a 3rd and long. It mattered not, as Naquin found Tiger TE Collin Zeringue on a pass up the middle of the field for a first down. Naquin would then find Chance Tregle in the endzone for the 3rd Hahnville touchdown and the first passing score for the Tigers.
The Hahnville defense continued its dominance, forcing a 3-and-out for Higgins behind multiple tackles for loss. On the Higgins punt, senior Hahnville safety Robert Jackson came up with a huge punt block while also recovering it, yet again giving Hahnville starting field position inside the redzone.
Hahnville would quickly capitalize off Jackson’s blocked punt, with Tiger RB Trey LaBranch finding the endzone on a short touchdown rush.
Adonis Friloux came out hungry on the following Higgins offensive possession, recording a tackle and then an 8 yard sack on the Higgins QB. Friloux’s excellent defensive stance pushed Higgins into another 3-and-out and Hurricane punting situation. For the second consecutive Higgins punt, Hahnville’s Robert Jackson came up with yet another block, this time with the ball being launched into the air off the hands of Jackson, and caught mid-air by fellow senior safety Lentrell Petetant in the redzone. Drew Naquin then picked up a rushing touchdown of his own following Jackson’s second punt block, giving Hahnville a 35-0 lead as the first half began to wind down.
L.W. Higgins would fail to score in the first half, while Hahnville would add another touchdown to their already impressive first half.
The second half was mainly mop up duty for the Hahnville Tigers as the second string offense would play the remainder of the game, adding one more touchdown to the scoreboard through the hard running of Trey LaBranch.
For Higgins, the offense finally began to show some signs of life, putting up 2 touchdowns on the ground from RB Jerann Washington Jr, who also exploded on a late run for 40 yards.
Final Score: Hahnville 49, L.W. Higgins 14.
Next week, Hahnville travels to Terrebonne High School, while the Higgins Hurricanes host West Jefferson at home.
