BREAKING NEWS: Dutchtown High School (Geismar, LA) DT Diego Spears Commits To The Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game

Dutchtown High School (Geismar, LA) DT Diego Spears has committed to play in the 2023 Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game, which will be played at Memorial Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Saturday, December 30th. The 6’1, 260 defensive tackle is one of three Griffins to play in the bowl game joining his offensive lineman buddy Chase Cangelosi and long snapper Grant Denicola.

The last two years, the Dutchtown Griffins have proven to be one of the toughest teams to play in South Louisiana under Guy Mistretta because of their stingy defense. Their tough, hard nosed, physical defensive front proved to be a key catalyst in why the Griffins were just a game short of making it all the way to the LHSAA Division I (Non-Select) State Championship after losing to Zachary in the semifinals. Leading the way in the trenches was Spears, who may not be the biggest defensive lineman out there in terms of height and weight, but what you cannot measure is heart, technique, and hustle. Those are all qualities that make him unique. He is also super strong in the weight room as he can bench press 365, squat 545, and can power clean 325. Being always the lower man and being active with his hands, Spears finds a way to always be there around the football, and that is something he takes away from the best defensive tackle in the NFL in Aaron Donald.

Diego Spears has actually been a familiar name to Gridiron Football as he made history last year as the first defensive player to make Gridiron Football’s Player of the Week with a 12 tackle, four TFL, two sack, one PBU, and a forced fumble performance in a 28-0 shutout victory over the Live Oak Eagles.

The former Gridiron Football Player of the Week was named 1st Team All-District and 2nd Team All-State for his contributions in leading the Griffins to their best season in program history. Over his prep career, he has 120 tackles, 24 sacks, 41 TFLs, and two pass breakups. Currently, Spears has received one offer from Louisiana Christian, but he has also received interest from Southland Conference rivals Southeastern and Nicholls. Playing his final game as a Griffin, Spears will love to showcase what he can do playing against some great talent.

“It means a lot for me. It gives me another chance to play the game I love and hopefully, get some more colleges offering me.”

When Diego Spears is not playing football, he likes to hang out with friends, family, and enjoys powerlifting. After his playing days are over, he wants to give back by becoming a coach and teaching kids the sport he loves.
