Heading into the 2024 season the U High Cubs, are looking to go for the championship this year, after coming up short last year in the semi-finals. The cubs with a very impressive roster, lead by 2025 LSU four star commit Keylan Moses, ULL three star commit Jayden Gloston, and on the offensive side, lead by three star quarterback Emile Picarella, and SLU three star commit Zay Martin, and 2026 five star interior lineman Lamar Brown. So, going into the season they have a lot of expectations when it comes to winning.
This year the Cubs, have their whole offensive line returning and in his 15 years this is his first time having a whole offensive line returning, this is a bonus because they know what they are doing. With all the eyes on them with the talent they have the success they have seen from former players that came through U High. Since most of these kids have been in the U High system since kindergarten they have been built up from K-12 system.
Coach Vice is living by an offense with a tight end and running a bunch of RPO, and last year changing defense from a three front to a four. Scheduling has been a little difficult since some teams do not want to play them, but they definitely have challenges with Archbishop Rummel, Catholic, St. Paul, and Woodlawn. Catholic and Rummel are two big games circled by the team just because of the rivalries built from the close games with them, but Coach Vice is looking forward to the St. Paul match up since they are a good team and have yet to play them.
Coach Vice did get asked the hard question of state championship or bust, he did not give a definitive answer, with the success, in the past couple of season he sort of hints at its looking like state championship with the talent that is leaving after this year.
I love being in a K-12 school, we walk to practice and we got kids high fiving us, I teach at the elementary in the PE.
Asked about the support from the administration
We had the pleasure to get in a interview with starting left guard Preston Jones, quarterback Emile Picarella, and defensive tackle Cayson Hill. The old expression iron sharpens iron, is the definition of these guys, with the friendly banter between Preston and Cayson since they get to go against each other every practice and make each other better. Emile boast about how great his offensive line is and possible the best in the state of Louisiana. Recruiting for these three have definitely been busy dealing with camps, practices, and dealing with visits.
We taking everything with a grain of salt but I feel like this year we really gonna step it up and make that final push to win the state championship
Cayson Hill on expectation of this year
We know what we have to do to get over the hump and we have been putting in the work, being as disciplined as possible
Emile Picarella about the outside noise
Everyone has that common goal, we want it more than anyone else in our bracket
Preston Jones on expectations
At the end of the interview we got the opportunity to invite these three players to the 2024 Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game. We got to surprise them after the excellent interview.
