Escambia High School LS Wyatt Reed has committed to the Gridiron Football All-American Bowl Game, and he will help ensure that a few important parts of this game will be pretty boring.
That sounds like a weird way to start, but that is ultimately the job of a long snapper. That’s not a bad thing. If the announcers in a broadcast are talking about the long snapper, that usually means disaster for his team. If everything goes to plan, the long snapper never gets mentioned in the successful punt attempt or the made field goal. Wyatt Reed’s highlight reel is a 2 and a half minutes of Wyatt getting the ball to his punter and preventing disaster. It’s not a particularly entertaining watch, but it’s incredibly important. Because Reed is so good at his job – he’s unbelievably consistent in his snap accuracy, and his average snap time is 0.69 seconds – he ensures that the holder or punter gets the ball and makes a successful kick or punt significantly more likely.
That being said, sometimes calling the long snapper’s name isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes, it means he made a game changing play in his team’s favor. Wyatt Reed is such a well-polished long snapper that he can do that. He runs a very respectable 4.68 40 yard dash, and once he gets that snap off, he is booking it all the way down the field to make the play on the punt return. He even made a couple tackles this season and recovered a fumble that the punt returner made. Wyatt Reed will put himself in position to make the play when he gets the chance. He already has an offer from Huntington College, but the bowl game is a great chance for him to get more looks.
I think this will be a great chance and opportunity to make a name for myself and continue to play football at the next level. I’m hoping to establish a good connection with coaches and players outside of just my high school team to get new eyes to help me improve my snaps.
