Zachary’s Defense Stifles St. Augustine’s Explosive Offense 17-7

The St. Augustine Purple Knights entered their Week 3 matchup after scoring 111 points in their first two games, but they were going to get tested by a fast and athletic Zachary Broncos defense.

Things were looking good early on for the Purple Knights as they marched down the field 65 yards on 11 plays capped off by a touchdown run by Dawson Simmons to take an early 7-0 lead, but the Broncos defense made it tough sledding for Simmons and company the rest of the way.

While the Zachary defense was stifling and suffocating the Purple Knights offense, it took a while for the Broncos’ offense to get going as well as their offense scored right before halftime with a Tyson George three-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven.

The Broncos took their first lead in the second half at 14-7 when backup quarterback Hudson Spangler gave the offense a spark by completing a 40 yard touchdown drive to DJ Franklin late in the third quarter.

Finally, their kicker Kellen Conachen put the game on ice with a 20 yard field goal less than five minutes left in the game at 17-7 to help the Zachary Broncos get the victory.

After not playing last week as their matchup against John Curtis was cancelled, the Broncos got back into playing rhythm and picked up their second win of the young season.

Through two games, Zachary has only given up 14 points in their wins against East Ascension and St. Augustine. Next up for head coach David Brewerton and the 2-0 Broncos, they will host McKinley on Friday.

Meanwhile for head coach Nick Foster and the Purple Knights, they will fall to 2-1 and it doesn’t get any easier as they will face off against the red hot Edna Karr Cougars on Saturday.
