Spring Tour: Covington High

On this episode of our Spring Tour, we visit Covington High School in Covington, La. The Lions held their annual intersquad spring game.

The Lions is a 5A program located on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. This program has only missed the playoffs once since 2009. Needless to say, the Lions program leads the pack as king of the jungle.

The pride is led by head coach Greg Salter. Greg is the grandson of legendary coach Jack Salter whom whom made a huge impact in Greg’s life and becoming a coach. “When I come to work, my goal, even though he is not with us (speaking of Jack), is to somehow make him proud. I don’t do everything as well as he did, but if I can come with the intent to try and make him proud and carry myself the way he did – if I can just do half of that, I think I will be successful each and every day. …(nola.com) Coach Salter took over this program in 2013 and is one of the longest tenured head coaches in District 6-5A.

“I am very pleased of how we did this spring,” said coach Salter, “we have a good group of talented kids coming back this year with a lot of experience where we hope to see what we saw tonight, some big plays on both sides of the ball, improvement from last year. So we are excited moving into the summer.”

Talking about his players

QB Jerome Elzy III “he puts in a lot time in the offseason, he travels around and does the 7 on 7 circuit, very poised in the pocket, very accurate, has a great grasp of the offense and a good understanding of the game,” said coach Salter.

QB Brandon Coakley “he is a good athlete he has all the tools to be a great QB and he is also playing some Safety for us witch will not only benefit him but us as a team.”

QB Caden Heck “he is a sophomore going to be a junior, had a great year for us in JV. He is one of those kids that is a combination of both, accurate passer and has the ability to run the ball tough as nails.”

“The biggest thing about the QB room here is that they support each other. They are each others biggest fans and they care about the success of one another.”

RB Justin Chatman “he is four year starter for us, has great speed, great hands, has the ability to run the ball out of the backfield and catch it in the slot. He can line up out wide and create mismatches for us on the outside. He is a kid that can do it all.”

RB David Harris “he had a huge year for us last year. Another special talent.” Watch the full interview with coach Salter below.

There is a lot to be excited about for the 2023 season for the Covington Lions. I hope to see you at Jack Salter Stadium this season and the Lions continue their winning ways.
