HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team got in some rainy day work as the Lions held their second scrimmage of spring camp Saturdaymorning in Strawberry Stadium.
Showers started late in the approximate 90-minute scrimmage as Southeastern concluded its third week of the spring.
“I wish the rain would have held off,” Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts said. “We got an opportunity to work on our two-minute drill, but I wish our first time in the hurry-up would have been in drier weather. But we got some good work in.”
The Lions went live with their quarterbacks – junior Donovan Isom, sophomore Chandler Eiland and Lorenzo Nunez – with Eiland tossing two touchdown passes and Isom one.
“It’s time to put those guys in some game situations so we can really evaluate them,” Roberts said, “not only on their ability to throw the ball and be in the pocket and run the offense but really run the football and make plays when they get the opportunity to.”
The offense made a quick impression as Eiland threaded a pass into sophomore fullback Zeke Jenkins for a 40-yard scoring on the opening play of the scrimmage. Junior Nih-jer Jackson later made a leaping grab over senior Courtney Rutledge for a 31-yard touchdown from Isom. Redshirt freshman Azende Magee stretched out in the end zone for a five-yard score from Eiland.
Senior Dillon Burkhard and junior Jonathan Tatum each made field goals of 28, 36 and 34 yards.
Southeastern also continued to run the ball effectively behind seniors Eugene Bethea and Darius Durall, as well as junior Darren Johnson. Bethea broke off a 51-yard run late in the scrimmage.
The Lion defense also showed improvement from the first scrimmage. Senior Micah Thomas, moving into the secondary this spring from quarterback, stopped one drive with an interception of an Isom pass at the two-yard line. Senior Ryan Sigers picked off a Nunez pass at the 24, while Rutledge out-fought Jackson for an Isom pass in the end zone.
“I thought we still had some missed tackles and we want to cut that down as much as we can,” Roberts said. “But I thought our guys played really hard and that’s really what we are looking for right now.”
“I would really just like to clean up some more assignments and stuff like that,” Roberts said of the goal for the final week. “I want to see how good we can actually get as far as our tempo and how physical we can be.”
Southeastern will wrap up the spring this week with practices at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday in Strawberry Stadium. The annual Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
