Southeastern 2014 Preview

I visited the Southeastern Lions football team last week and you could really feel the excitement for the upcoming football season. Coach Roberts sat down with me and told me that he is always striving to win a championship and that this year is no diffferent. I asked coach Lacy, the defensive line coach and recruiting cordinator, if being ranked in the preseason polls at #3 had any effect on the team, and he said that it really has not made any impact on them. “It does not matter where you are ranked at the beginning of the year but where you are ranked at the end of the year,” Lacy said. He noted that as a coach you strive every season to be ranked and win, “that’s our job.”

Last season Southeastern surpassed everyone’s expectations by going undefeated in the Southland Confrence and going deep into the playoffs to eventually loose to New Hampshire. Coach Ron Roberts has truly turned around the Lion football program as it has been over 30 years since the Lions have been confrence champs and in the playoffs.

The Lions have just signed another great recruiting class for the 2014 season. They signed freshmen like Julius Maracalin, RB, from Plaquemin HS, who rushed 315 times for 2230 yards with 29 touchdowns and was a district 4A All State selection; and Pierson Villarubia, OL, from Mandeville, who is 6’5″ and 295 lbs and was a 3 star recruit by ESPNU. They also signed Walter Ladner, OL, from Slidell HS, who is 6′ 5″ and 285 lbs was class president and a member of the National Honors Society. This impressive list does not include transfer students Like Micah Eugene, S, who was a rotational starter at LSU last season. SLU has positioned themselves to be a powerhouse football team for the future.

I am looking forward to seeing what the SLU Lions can and will do this season. They really have become an elite team and definitely can compete with the McNesse State Cowboys, who have been leaders of the Southland Confrence for years now. With players like Bryan Bennett, QB, Micah Eugene, S, Jordan Batiste, DB, Jacob Newman, DE, Kaleb Muse, LB, and Xavier Roberson, RB; the Lions look to repeat as Southland Champions and could even go further into the playoffs than last year.
