School Spotlight: Hueytown Golden Gophers (Hueytown, AL)

Hueytown High School is a public high school in the Birmingham suburb of Hueytown. The school colors are purple and gold with the Golden Gophers being their mascot. Hueytwon competes in the 6A class of athletics in the AHSAA. Jameis Winston is one notable alumni that is currently in the NFL. Current Head Coach Greg Patterson has been at Hueytown since 2019.

Before becoming the Head Coach at Hueytown in 2019, Greg Patterson had known about Hueytown High School for multiple years, but not much in specific. Back in 2011, Coach Patterson was coaching baseball at Walker (now Jasper) back when Jameis was on the Hueytown baseball team. Coach Patterson only had an acquaintance-type working style with Hueytown.

Back in 2016, Coach Patterson was hired by, then Head Coach, Scott Mansell to be the Inside Linebackers Coach at Hueytown. That year they went 8-3, losing in the first round of the playoffs. The very next year, Coach Patterson became the Defensive Line Coach, with the school having a down year at 5-6 and losing in the first round. The very next year Hueytown went 9-3, losing to Saraland in the 2nd round of the playoffs. After the conclusion of the 2018 season, Coach Mansell retired and Coach Patterson replaced him as Head Coach.

In his first year as Head Coach, Patterson was blessed to have a great group of athletes returning. The Gophers went 11-2, losing in the third round of the playoffs to Opelika. In 2020, Hueytown had their only down year with Coach Patterson as head coach with a 5-6 record, losing in the first round of the playoffs. The very next yer in 2021, Coach Patterson led Hueytown to their very first ever State Title game. They went 13-2, eventually losing to Clay-Chalkville High in the Championship game. This was a very big accomplishment for Hueytown, considering that they have never been to a State Title game. Last year, Hueytown’s record was 8-4, losing in the second round of the playoffs to Theodore High. Coach Patterson’s overall record at Hueytown is 29-10.

Looking towards the future, Coach Patterson preached that building the program up began the year before he arrived at Hueytown. His goal was to build long term stability by keeping the same core coaches there, considering that not a lot of coaches have stayed long. Moving forward, everything that Hueytown is building starts with administration. The administration of Hueytown is committed to the team being successful. Allowing the program to have resources and keeping quality men as head coaches is key to the future success of the football program. I was able to chat with Coach Patterson about some of his top prospects from the team for next year.
