School Spotlight: Airline High School (Bossier City, LA)

Airline High School is a public high school in the Bossier Parish school district in Bossier City, LA. Airline was founded in 1964 and has a student body that has grown around approximately 1,888 students. Airline high schools mascot is a Viking and their school colors are columbia and navy. Airline plays in the LHSAA 5A division of play and they also compete in District 1. Airline has won the Louisiana State Championship once in its history, and it was only a few years after establishment in 1967. The Championship was won in a 20-7 upset against Holy Cross in New Orleans. Some notable alumni from Airline high school include PGA Tour player David Toms, former LSU and MLB player Todd Walker, and former NBA player Larry Robinson.

Airline was led by Head Coach Justin Scogin this past season. This was Head Coach Scogin’s first season at the helm of the Vikings team. Before his time at Airline, Coach Scogin served as the offensive coordinator and AD at Leesville for 5 years. Head Coach Scogin led the Vikings to a 7-4 season and went undefeated in district play. This 7-0 run in district play is what awarded the Vikings the 5A district 1 title.

I was fortunate enough to get the chance to speak with Head Coach Justin Scogin in order to gain insight into what his Airline Vikings team is all about.

“We want the kids to have fun and remember their time here for the rest of their life. It’s the most important 4 years of any kids life and with that we like to do the fun stuff like throwing the ball around and playing some man-to-man when we can but at the end of the day we are gonna do what we can to win games.”

At the end of the day that’s what it should be all about for these teams, having fun. In Airline’s case, starting off the season 0-3 can ruin a teams outlook on the season. Implementing the idea that it’s all about fun is the perfect motivator to collect some wins. This was proven by the Vikings comeback into a 7 game win streak in order to achieve the district title. Although the season was cut short by a tough playoff loss to Haughton, the outlook this offseason has been positive for the Vikings. I was told the main focal points for the players is learning to show up everyday to work hard and overcome obstacles in order to be stronger mentally.

The outlook this season for the Vikings is looking great as far as player experience and return go. Head Coach Scogin said he feels great about his team on both sides of the ball. He feels good about the players replacing empty spots as well as the returning guys. On the offensive side of the ball players to keep an eye on include class of 2024 athletes RB Tre Jackson and receivers Bob Patterson and Bryson Broom. Class of 2025 QB Ben Taylor is a guy who got experience in his sophomore season that he looks to use as his advantage this season. Class of 2025 athletes TE Ayden Baker and WR Kenny Darby are other players that look to make an impact this season. Players on the defensive side of the ball include the likes of 2024 athletes DB Ladarius Epps, FS Brayden Linton, MLB Champ Endris and CB Sincere Walker. Class of 2026 NG Caleb Crow was a notable athlete on the defense as well.

This Airline team is chock full of experienced talent as well as young talent which shows why Head Coach Scogin feels great about the future of his team. The combination of young and old talent will give Airline a great opportunity for success this season and so on.
