Marksville Defeats Avoyelles 33-28

The Marksville Tigers got a big victory over their district rival in the Avoyelles Mustangs to start the season. Led by their new head coach Josh Harper, who came over as a longtime coach at Sacred Heart, the Tigers snapped the Mustangs two game winning streak in this rivalry with a 33-28 win to start the season.

The Mustangs took the first lead of the game at 8-0 with a Decareyn Sampson 50-yard touchdown run followed by a two-point conversion run by Nick Casugay.

Marksville responded right back with three straight touchdowns from Elidrick Murray, who ran for a 43 yard touchdown, Kyreon Prier, who had a 19 yard touchdown run, and a 41 yard interception from Murray to give the Tigers a 21-8 lead at halftime.

The Tigers kept on putting the pedal to the metal with two more touchdowns including a 62-yard touchdown from Prier and a one-yard touchdown run from Chris Bryant to make the score 33-8. Avoyelles would score on two more Sampson touchdown passes to Kevin Jones and Casugay plus a Sampson touchdown run to pull within six, but Marksville would recover the onside kick and run the rest of the clock out.

The player of the game for Marksville was Elidrick Murray, who had 15 carries for 101 yards a touchdown and 10 tackles on defense with a pick six. For Avoyelles, former Gridiron Football Player of the Week Decareyn Sampson did everything he could to keep the Mustangs in the game with over 111 yards rushing and four total touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the Marksville Tigers start the season at 1-0.

Next up for the 1-0 Tigers, they will face the Sacred Heart Trojans on Friday while the 0-1 Mustangs will go on the road Friday to face off against Teurlings Catholic.
