LSU comes back home after wrapping a two game road trip with games at Alabama and at Ole Miss. The Tigers are looking to punch their ticket to the SEC championship with a win over the Razorbacks. Coming into the matchup the Razorbacks have had two full weeks to prepare for the Tigers after the bye week. A much needed bye week after the Razorbacks suffered a crippling, at home loss to Western Kentucky 45-19 back on November 9th. That loss would be the reason for Arkansas and former head coach Chad Morris to part ways. Barry Lunney Jr. has taken up the mantle as interim head coach in the meantime as Arkansas continues its search for a full time coach. In his weekly SEC teleconference call Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron noted that he knew what the interim coach tag was like, and what he thought Arkansas might be doing as a team coming up. “I think you can do somethings, some things that have hurt us. I don’t think you can overhaul a system in a week. Maybe play a different quarterback or maybe blitz more. I’m sure a coach will like to add his flavor to the team.”
The Tigers would win the toss and receive the opening kickoff. Quarterback Joe Burrow looked poised and confident as the Tigers first drive went 75 yards in a mere six plays. Something that Tiger fans have become a custom to seeing with this offense this year. The Razorbacks would get the ball on their first possession and move the ball just 20 yards eventually stalling at their own 45 and punting. The Tigers got the ball back, and went three and out for the first time since facing Auburn. LSU would only put 7 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter tonight. Though they got out to a slow start, it would not last, as the Tigers erupted for 42 combined points in the second and third quarters.
In the second quarter freshman running back Ty Davis-Price, starting the scoring boom for the Tigers with a two yard plunge. This would cap of a 75 yard six play drive that took barely two minutes off the clock. Next junior running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire would get in on the action, this time with a 27 yard rush off the left side that ended a 62 yard drive. Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase added to his already record breaking season by hauling in another touchdown pass from Burrow, his 14th on the season, in the third. Edwards-Helaire would also add two more scores in the third, a run of 26 yards, then a monster 89 yarder that came on what was supposed to be his last carry of the night. “I went in was going to get the two yards, and get out of bonds” Edwards-Helaire says “but it parted like the Red Sea, and I wasn’t about to just take a few yards. I was going to see if I could make it happen. Everyone talks about break-away speed so I hope that was fast enough for everybody.”
LSU would keep up the scoring onslaught and go on 49 point run against the Razorbacks, and not surrender another point until the middle of the fourth quarter, when the third string quarterback Jack Lindsey came in to relieve the injured Nick Starkel. The LSU defense looks to be getting back on track after this week’s game. JaCoby Stevens, who was very vocal about the play of the defense last week, had three sacks in today’s game. The junior safety was a playmaker all over the field tonight for the Tigers, and Head Coach Ed Orgeron stated during the post-game press conference “we need to get JaCoby in on more blitzes.”
Burrow continues to shine: With his 41 touchdowns on the season, Joe Burrow is currently 3rd most in SEC history. 2017 quarterback Drew Locke holds the SEC single season touchdown record with 44. Tonight Burrow passed Danny Wuerffel, 39 in 1996 at Florida, and Andre Woodsen, 40 in 2007 at Kentucky
LSU also became the first school in SEC history to have a passer throw for more than 4000 yards in a season, two receivers to have more than a thousand yards in a season, and a rusher with more than a thousand yards in a season.
