In wake of a down year for LSU football, fans can only look on and appreciate the magic of the Tigers. Somehow, someway LSU finds a way to keep fans interested and mesmerized. Traveling to Gainseville, Florida, is never easy for anyone but the Tigers breaks began with the suspension of freshman quarterback Treon Harris.

The Florida’s Harris, not Brandon, is another SEC quarterback that looks to make a large impact on a team that is lacking a quality passing game. Harris was suspended from the team in light of a sexual battery allegation, later to be dropped by the accuser. Harris was reinstated to the team but too unprepared to play for the Gators. The LSU-Florida rivalry is one that has given football fans some of their most memorable highlights. Could Saturday’s game live up to the billing of a high-profile, high-energy game despite both teams recent struggles? We should have known better than to ask that question.

The game began the same way any SEC showdown does; both teams came out pounding the ball trying to feel each other out. Andre Dubose, an impact player for the Gators scored the game’s first points on an incredible 62-yard punt return. LSU responded well with their own score. Freshman tailback Leonard Fournette was the battering ram the Tigers used to soften the Florida defense early, who capped a Tiger drive with a 12-yard run for a touchdown. The half ended with LSU trailing Florida 14-17; it was at this point, fans began to realize that this game was going to one to add to the memory bank.

Fournette scored the first touchdown of the second-half with about 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. After a missed extra point, LSU led Florida 20-17. Half-way through the 4th quarter, Florida scored on an 11-yard Jeff Driskel pass to Demarcus Robinson to take the lead 24-20. At this point LSU fans are getting nervous about the missed extra point because now we must find the end zone in order to win the game. LSU put together what was their best drive of the night, 9 plays and 75 yards, capped off by an Anthony Jennings touchdown pass to Travin Dural. Through the course of the game, Travin stepped out as the dependable play-maker for LSU. Travin and Anthony seem to have nice chemistry because the fade route to end the drive was perfectly thrown and Dural made a one-handed catch you can see on ESPN’s top plays. LSU leads 27-24 for an entire minute. The first play of the responding Florida drive, Jeff Driskel throws a bomb to a wide open gator that put Florida in a position to score. LSU’s defense held and only allowed 3 points from the Gators. LSU’s offense was stopped cold and gave Florida the ball in a position to score and take the lead; but wait, it could not end that easy. After 2 quick passes for a first down Florida threw a slant to Demarcus Robinson that turned into a game-saving play for the Tigers. Upon contact with the ball, Robinson was clipped by an LSU defender that knocked Robinson unconscious as he fell to the ground. The ball hung in the air and was intercepted by Rickey Jefferson and returned to LSU scoring territory. The great play was marked by the sad reminder that these players are not indestructible; Robinson lay on the field unresponsive as everyone in Ben Hill-Griffin Stadium sat in silence. Robinson regained consciousness and was loaded out a stretcher as many LSU players came up to the cart and shook his hand showing tremendous sportsmanship. The game resumed with LSU in possession of the ball in field-goal range for Colby Delahoussaye. LSU almost blew their shot at points by running the ball with 22 seconds remaining and zero timeouts. A pile on the ball caused LSU to finally get lined up for a spike with only 3 seconds remaining and LSU fans were reminded of how well the Tigers do not manage the clock. Luckily for LSU, the referees turned the clock back to 10 seconds and LSU was able to stop the remaining time from running off. Social media rumors began that Delahoussaye told Coach Miles to get the ball anywhere but the right hash… With the ball on the right hash Delahoussaye lined up for a game-winning 50 yard field goal. The kick was up and the magic of LSU football was restored was the Tigers beat the Gators 30-27.

Saturday was a reminder of why we are LSU faithful. Despite being in an unusual poll position, LSU has the magic that makes them fun football. Many things could be taken from Saturday’s performance, but the most important is that we are LSU Forever.
